Sara

American Literature Tutor • +22 Subjects

Hello! I'm Sara, originally hailing from New York City though currently on a wild adventure backpacking around the world. But don't worry--I still have prime access to solid internet connection and the flexibility to help as much as needed. As a New Yorker born and raised, I'm very well acquainted with the intense demands of the NYC school system (both public and private). I'm here to help students understand that they have what it takes to be a solid writer, and as a result, hopefully, lessen the pressure and stress that I know that students today are under. After a two-year stint in high school leading a course aimed to help ease the transition of incoming freshman into my school, I knew I wanted to continue working with students in whatever way I could moving forward. In college, I enrolled in a writing-tutoring program that landed me two jobs on my campus's writing center. As a writing fellow, each semester I worked closely with students in a freshman writing-intensive English class aimed to bring everyone up to the same collegiate writing level. As a writing tutor, I held general weekly office hours that were open to any student seeking a tutoring session for any stage of their writingprocess across all subjects. In addition to these tutoring positions, I also worked on Colby's student newspaper The Colby Echo as the head copy editor. What I enjoy the most about tutoring is seeing students realize their own potential and gain confidence as they start to discover what they're truly capable of. Even while on the road, reading and writing will always be a passion of mine and I'm eager to help lessen the fear factor that I know it can often hold for others.

I am NYS certified Mathematics Teacher (Grades 7-12) currently teaching in Harlem, NY. As someone who loved the sciences I want to encourage students to enjoy the struggle that comes with advanced mathematics and to recognize the importance of math proficiency among other subjects. I believe the key to motivating students to push themselves with certain topics is relatability; how can I take what I learned and apply it to something that I want to accomplish?

Anthropology Tutor • +6 Subjects

I am a recent graduate from Stony Brook University with a double Bachelors of Science in Biology and Anthropology. While attending Stony Brook University I specialized in ecology and biological anthropology and was an undergraduate researcher in a population genetics lab. My future goal is to obtain my PhD in human evolutionary biology (particularly population genetics). This coming fall, I will be starting a position as a laboratory assistant at the University of Michigan. My primary teaching experience has been through my undergraduate career, as I was a teacher’s assistant for an upper division biology course. Beyond my teaching assistant role, I was a resident assistant for 2 years. In this position, I guided and mentored many of my peers, be it academically or personally. My specific academic strengths are ecology, evolution, genetics, biological anthropology and archaeology. My interests in these topics were heightened when I had the opportunity to participate in a study abroad program in Kenya. I was able to extensively study and explore the ecological, archaeological and geological uniqueness of the Turkana region of Kenya. On my down time I love spending time outdoors exploring nature and the beautiful world we have. My general approach when tutoring students is to first, determine the student’s strengths and weaknesses and then utilize these strengths and weaknesses to determine the appropriate studying and learning plan. I am passionate and eager to start sharing my knowledge and experiences with my students!

I love helping people and I love education, which is why I love teaching!I believe everyone can learn if they truly want to. After all, everyone has potential. I also believe that we can do hard things if we put our minds to it. For example, I chose to study Spanish and became fluent in college, without having to go on a study abroad. If we use our resources, work hard, and do our best, everything will work out. I've seen this principle in action throughout my life. I have an AAS is Arts and Sciences, a BS in Home and Family Living with a minor in Spanish, and an MA in Hispanic Linguistics. Since I graduated in 2013, I also spent two years working for FamilySearch.org and two years as a middle school teacher. Believe me; it was hard, but it was absolutely worth the work to be able to tutor now!

I received my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with a Minor in Mathematics from Alvernia University in Reading, PA. I proceeded to work for four years full-time following my undergraduate studies, with one year spent as a dental laboratory technician and three years employed as a nursing assistant. I completed my graduate studies at the University of Saint Joseph, in West Hartford, CT, and achieved a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. In August of 2022, I passed the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) and became a Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C). While I am excited to tutor students in preparation for the PANCE, medicine, medical terminology, and other subjects, my true passion is vested in helping others achieve the goals they have set forth for themselves. I first discovered this enthusiasm serving as a science and mathematics tutor during my undergraduate years, and I feel that it is my responsibility to impart the knowledge that I have gained from my education for the benefit of others. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy reading and trail running, or any balance of both physical and mental pursuits.

I am a recent graduate from the University of North Texas. I obtained my BA in Biology and then returned for an MA in Linguistics, along with a Graduate Certificate in TESOL. Teaching is a passion of mine, particularly teaching English as a Second Language. I have been tutoring for over three years, and have created an ESL class at a local church to help serve my community. Many students seek help from an ESL teacher for a specific reason. It could be to raise their TOEFL scores, strengthen their communication skills for their job, or for a better quality of life while living in an English speaking country. Whatever the reason, I am here to help my students to the best of my ability. My teaching philosophy is that I aim to motivate my students, while instilling confidence. I want my students to leave my lessons with confidence in the skills that they have just gained.Aside from creating fun and interactive English lessons, my hobbies include playing the guitar, going for walks, and learning Korean. I also love music and watching foreign dramas.
