History Tutoring review by Ruth in Hoffman Estates, IL
I had been emailed me a few samples of the student's writing, per my request, in advance of our tutoring session. This helped me get a sense of his writing strengths (a good innate grasp of flow and logical structure) and weaknesses (short sentences, generic nouns, spelling and grammar errors, and difficulty with reading comprehension). In today's session, he asked if I could help him with a history assignment, saying he often found history difficult as well as English / writing. I observed that his history assignments relied on the same reading comprehension skills as his English assignments, so working on reading comprehension would benefit him in both subjects. He showed me his current history homework, which involved analyzing a historical drawing and answering questions about it. His observations were very astute. However, I noticed he would often answer questions quickly and too briefly; I encouraged him to spend a bit more time and attention on each question, and with that he was able to generate a more detailed and fleshed out responses. I discussed with him the difference between seeing and inferring - and helped him differentiate between what he actually saw in the picture vs. the interpretation he was giving to what he saw. He seemed to grasp the distinction. He also asked if I could help him with a science assignment. I explained to him that I usually don't tutor science, however, since the assignment involved reading a text and answering questions, I did it with him, since it worked on the same reading comprehension skills. I went over with him how to take notes as he read - summarizing his reading in a notebook and writing down questions to ask the teacher in class. I encouraged him to take notes as he read in his English and history assignments as well, since I think that will improve his reading retention and comprehension. I asked him show me those notes the next time we meet.

History Tutoring review by Brandon in Hoffman Estates, IL
We first briefly did a review for the student's upcoming science test on cells. We specifically went over the history of cells and went over cell theory again. Afterwards, we went over material for an upcoming history test. The test involved writing an essay about ancient Greece, so I went over the textbook and showed her how to more effectively organize the material in order to make a better essay. She seemed to take the suggestions I gave her to heart and it seemed like she would be well-prepared for both tests.

The first student and I read "Introduction to Renaissance" in textbook and took notes on index cards covering the who, the what, and the how of 14th & 15th Century Italian city-states. The second student is doing well in bio and we studied for quiz tomorrow on cell structure. Did RTN for next unit.
