I graduated UC Irvine as a biology major and a psychology minor. There is an age old saying about brilliant teachers, “He who is awesome can teach others to be awesome as well!” OK, so I made that one up, but…I know this is the truth, because I had a teacher who did just that. Truly great teachers are approachable, enthusiastic, and most importantly patient. And not only do I possess these traits, but would like to expound these qualities onto other students.During my college experience, I had one such professor that really stood out in his abilities. While he appeared more like someone’s congenial grandfather with his sweater vest and deep belly laugh; Dr. Edgar had vast knowledge of organic chemistry and taught with such patience and enthusiasm for the subject that he would even attract the attention of passersby in the hallway. He always made an effort to build a rapport with his students, and taught them how even the seemingly uninteresting parts can be cool, too.I’ve taken Dr. Edgar’s philosophy on teaching to heart and have begun teaching others in this same way. I’ve always loved science because its foundation hinges on finding new frontiers and forging new discoveries in a dynamic and ever changing field. I achieved a Master’s degree in Chemistry from a world-renown University, Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland where I not only received a wonderful education but truly grew as a person. I later went on to work in the biopharmaceutical industry for 4 years and ultimately secured a position at a prestigious university, doing ground breaking research on hearing loss. Within my lab I am often looked upon as an expert, and positively impact my colleagues by mentoring junior members of our lab. My enthusiasm for the subject matter is often contagious, and confers excitement in others. This emboldens my peers to grow, which is what being an excellent teacher is all about. I’ve seen first-hand how patience and excitement can take even the most meager ember and cultivate it into a blazing fire. Likewise, given the right environment and proper direction, students can be transformed from a small glow, to a radiant light for others to reflect upon.I am available to tutor evenings after 6pm and anytime on weekends. As instructors, we must not only inform, but also explain, clarify, backtrack, bring in outside examples, and respond to challenging questions. We must comfort and relax our students, and help them develop tools for success. We know that our job is challenging, because if our job were easy, then our students wouldn't need us.I feel that it takes someone who is cognizant of all of these things in order to be a truly effective educator. During my 8+ years as a high school chemistry teacher and tutor, I have developed the experience and the skills in order to help students with challenging subjects, and not only to improve their grades, but to improve their understanding and confidence with which they approach their classes. While my own knowledge of chemistry and math is very strong, that means nothing if I can not pass it on to people learning the subjects. That is where I take pride in my abilities though - my students over the years consistently praised my ability to take complex ideas and break them down into relatable and manageable ideas. As a starting point, I always take into account the group of students in my class before designing the classes. For me, it is a priority to have communication and contact with my fellow teachers to understand the best way to proceed with the curriculum and course programming. It is also important to recognize approaches that include task- based activities, the use of cognitive grammar to explain common grammatical problems in students, the application of authentic materials in the classroom, gamification in the classroom, and an important emphasis on the communicative approach in the classroom. In addition, I have applied some materials that I created, to my classes and it is something that I am always willing to continue doing. In my university research, I specialized in the formation of Spanish in heritage speakers. I proposed extensive literature as a didactic tool in the classroom that helps develop vocabulary and grammar acquisition in students.
