Geneva, IL Essay Editing tutoring
Today I introduced the student to reading strategies. I set the purpose with using these different skills to make sure we understand what we are reading and making us stronger readers. The three strategies we used were prediction, compare and contrast, and personal connections. He did a really good job with using the strategies when prompted. We worked with a Venn diagram to compare characters in our first text, and used personal connections with him and his brother. Then we made a prediction for the following chapter. When we started Stink, he reviewed the notes we took the last time we were together and read chapter 3. During this session, most of our time went to reading, and we quickly reviewed the multiplication we did. He did the quick quiz with 100 percent accuracy.

Today I introduced the word family-am and -an. Again I first review the letter sounds. Then we begin learning the -am and -an word family. After that, we begin practice reading by adding a consonant at the begin of the word (e.g. c-at). The same applies for the -an family. The student is making good progress. She is a beginning reader, so she still takes her time to decode sounds and blend sounds together.

Today I met with the student and his mother at the local library. He is a great kid and wants to improve his reading skills. We went through the children's section of the library looking for adventure-themed books, and we stumbled upon a few books he found interesting. Together, he and I read "The Adventures of Captain Underpants." He read the entire book from end to end throughout today's session. I noticed he initially stumbled on certain words, but as he continued reading, he raised his confidence levels and even read louder. Next session, he and I will continue practicing reading and also work on 4th grade level math.

Today I met with the students. We talked about a picture I had, and they described what actions had happened. Next, they showed me pictures from Saudi Arabia and told me stories. The third student talked to me for close to 1/2 hour. He, too, told me stories about the picture I had. The fourth student and I spoke for a bit. I then showed her a website and explained how she could use it for not only English, but for her science and math classes as well. She ended our session by playing a vocabulary game. She practiced the audio version.

Today I reviewed parts of speech with the students. They provided examples, took notes and read a passage aloud identifying the parts of speech. They also analyzed writing samples of different genres to identify the parts of speech and how they changed the meaning of sentences. The students were left with a capitalization assignment and reading assignment.
