IB Mathematics SL Tutoring FAQ
Students taking IB Mathematics SL can fall prey to some difficulties. Certain problems may be caused by the expansive range of concepts that the course covers, as well as the depth at which each concept is discussed. Other difficulties may arise from the teacher's approach to the material. IB courses require their students to undertake group work, independent projects, and outside research to demonstrate and increase their mathematical knowledge. Being able to solve a math problem correctly does not guarantee you success in the course. Finally, the cumulative IB Mathematics SL exam can pose a significant obstacle for students, as it is primarily based on short-answer problems. Students must systematically demonstrate how to arrive at the correct answer, not just select it from the provided possible responses.
Maybe you are struggling with tough algebra concepts. It could be that you can't quite grasp complicated geometry and trigonometry topics. You might have forgotten tricky statistics concepts such as probability and experiments. Some people struggle with differential calculus. No matter which subjects are tripping you up, there is a tutor available to help you. Whether you are looking to brush up on tough concepts before the exam or looking to boost your exam scores to impressive levels, you will find help in your tutor.

We worked on identifying and sketching polyhedra. The student practiced using isometric dot paper to accurately draw different types of prisms and pyramids. We began talking about volume and surface area by relating them to the size of a gift and the amount of wrapping paper needed, respectively.
The student reviewed positive and negative integers. He worked on addition and subtraction problems using negative integers. The student has good grasp on adding negative and positive integers and is ready to increase problem difficulty. The student also completed his year end math assessment.
Today we reviewed her recent quiz and homework packet. She is having her final soon, so she let me know the areas she wanted to review. We discussed probability and creating a tree diagram. We also worked in inequalities and solving for the variable. We will review more next time to ensure she has a better grasp of the material. We looked at graphs and discussed determining the slope, performing translations and how to plot reflections.
We finished our study for the math portion of the test today. We focused on the few problem types that give them the most trouble and worked with the student on improving his calculator use.
The student practiced various questions for her integrated algebra exam from old exams. Areas of focus included functions and conversion of units. The student also practiced showing all her work for her solutions, verbally expressing her thinking process and checking her answers.
We worked through the student's homework, and I left my work for him as a template for future reference. The student wished we had been able to cover more ground, so in upcoming sessions we will only work one type of each problem and he can practice on his own.
