Justina

Certified Tutor

I recently graduated with a bachelor's degree in sustainability from Jacksonville University, and then moved across the country to pursue a master's in environmental engineering. I am passionate about the opportunities education opens, and I love helping students succeed! I have tutored a variety of age ranges and skill levels, primarily in math. I enjoy taking a "goal oriented" approach to tutoring, in which the student and I can break down our main goal into smaller goals. My approach allows students to feel less overwhelmed, while giving them a foundation to begin solving problems themselves. There is no problem your student and I cannot tackle!

What is your teaching philosophy?

I take a "goal oriented" approach in which the student and I establish our main goal, be it to solve the individual problem, or to prepare for a test, et cetera. From there, I work with the student to break down the main goal into smaller goals. By breaking down a big goal into smaller goals, students typically feel less overwhelmed, and reaching the small goals gives a feeling of accomplishment and confidence. Not only that, but my approach begins developing students' independent thinking of how to solve and work through problems on their own.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During my first session with a student, I like the student to work through an assignment from their teacher or professor. I am able to assess the student's strengths and see where he or she is getting stuck. From there, I ask leading questions to gauge the student's understanding of key concepts and their applications. I also ask the student what their goal is in the course, and begin breaking their goal into smaller goals.
