Cambridge History of Architecture Tutoring FAQ
If you are a college student who is interested in becoming an architect, or if you are an art history major who is interested in studying various cultural movements across the world, you will need to have an understanding of the history of architecture. This course considers subject matter from a global perspective, introducing spaces and buildings characteristic of a wide variety of cultures, regions, and eras. Memorization and image recognition become valuable skills to have at one's disposal in a history of architecture course, but the subject offers further challenges in addition to memorizing names, dates, and locations.
When taking this course, you are not only required to be familiar with various structures, but you will also have to think critically about them and synthesize conclusions about architecture by considering very different, distant, and chronologically separated works in light of one another. Thus, you might not only be expected to be familiar with the ruins of Machu Picchu and the structure of ancient Roman cities, but may also be asked to compare and contrast them in order to derive new insights about each. Whether you are focusing on a single culture's structures in great detail, or are learning about architectural trends that developed across a large swath of history, history of architecture tutoring can help you identify structures with confidence and understand their social contexts.
One-on-one tutoring can help you learn to navigate through the vast variety of architectural structures in the world. It is important to create a personal timeline of structures and changes to help you maneuver through the course of architectural history with confidence, and an experienced private tutor can help you do so. A personal tutor can help you to distinguish between architecture that shows Buddhist influences and that which shows early Christian influences, tell early Roman and late Roman structures apart, and compare and contrast early Islamic designs with late medieval European structures. Your tutor can help you gain a historical perspective on all of the granular knowledge that you learn for your course, which can be invaluable when you are asked to identify influences of earlier architectural periods in later structures.
Unlike classroom-based lessons, which can move at a quick pace that leads to further confusion, learning the history of architecture under the guidance of a personal tutor allows you to benefit from a customizable lesson plan. Here, you have the ability to dictate the direction of each lesson, and can choose to spend extra time reviewing difficult concepts, as well as completely skipping over details that you already understand. For this reason, studying with a private tutor is an effective and time efficient way to review.
Your tutor knows that you have a busy schedule, and he or she is happy to conduct lessons at a time that doesn't require you sacrificing important study or work time. You are able to meet for lessons any time of the week, even on weekends. Your tutor can also meet you at any location, whether it's a library, your school, or your own home. Plus, the Varsity Tutors live learning platform allows you to meet with a private tutor either in person or face-to-face online. This gives you the flexibility to meet with your tutor at the time and location of your choice.
Don't become overwhelmed in the face of your class expectations. Before your grades begin to suffer, or before you consider changing your degree program, contact Varsity Tutors and ask for help finding a tutor in your area. Whatever your goals are, private tutoring can help you reach them efficiently and successfully. We are committed to helping you find a perfect tutor that fits both your schedule and learning style.

Recent Cambridge History of Architecture Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I went over the concepts from one of the reading assignments due for her psychology course on Tuesday. This article, which was rather extensive, covered methods of classification and assessment. We reviewed what makes naming and categorizing mental disorders so difficult, as well as why classification is nevertheless worthwhile. We also reviewed the DSM and its benefits/drawbacks and went into more detail about the history of the publication. Then, we moved onto assessment methods, covering the most common forms of psychological evaluation, including interviews, intelligence tests, objective tests, projection tests, and neurological tests.
Today, he spent two hours writing his first Critique paper. We spent time going over what the assignment was asking for, researching for the one additional source, and writing the paper. For the next paper, we will work more on the student trying to correct his own grammar and syntax.
During today's session, the student and I worked on psychology. Initially, we worked on preparing her for her upcoming psychology test. We spent time looking at various psychological disorders, with particular emphasis on the precise criteria for each disorder. Next, we worked on her psychology paper about the portrayal of a psychological disorder in a film or TV show. We spent time going over all the evidence for her chosen diagnosis, and spent additional time trying to determine the paradigm that best explained her illness. Overall, we had a very productive session.
The student has a Social Studies test on Thursday, so we spent a long time finishing the study guide for his test. We talked about what would be on the test and we decided that it would be a good idea for me to create a practice test for him to take tomorrow.
Researched for an extensive project on South Carolina. Covered the climate, people who settled there, Native Americans, religious tolerance, landmarks, and government of Colonial South Carolina.
Today we continued our review for the student's political psychology final. We covered social identity formation, and the use of media to incite political violence, including case studies of Rwanda and Yugoslavia.
