The student has begun work on chapter 6 of his course studying trade routes in China and central Asia. He has a great grasp on how to take notes. We discussed how to better map out what would be needed for study from his nightly reading; how he could better take notes; and how to review his notes. We also discussed how to make sure the vocabulary for the chapter is understood. The session was outstanding. He is a really smart young man.

The student has an assignment due next week where she is required to write a paragraph on 21 different topics and how they relate to the French Revolution. She had completed a first draft of 11 of these topics and we went over them, making sure she had all the supporting details necessary to support her main idea. We also went through and cleaned up her sentence structure, grammar and word usage. At the end of the session, I encouraged her to focus on this as she writes the drafts of the remaining paragraphs. We are scheduled to meet again on Sunday to go over the balance of the assignment.

Student 1, Student 2, and I talked about reading to stay on schedule, even if the teacher hasn't gotten that far in the lectures. I encouraged Student 1 and Student 2 to read according to the schedule the teacher had laid out for them. We proceeded to get them up to date, and we planned what to do before the next session. We also developed an overall strategy for the class reading, assignments, and test preparation. I look forward to meeting with them again.

The student and I studied for her upcoming test by using jeopardy-like questions about the Middle Ages, the Crusades, and Arab empires. We also used a reader's theater script to role-play different characters in world history. Finally, she and I watched a video about early civilizations and ordered them chronologically. Throughout the session, I sprinkled in random questions about the content to assess her knowledge and progress.

Today, we began by going over how to write a solid five paragraph essay. This will help him prepare for the SAT, his English classes, and other, harder essays. Specifically, we went over how to use evidence and how to structure an essay. With the final thirty minutes, we began to do some light multiple-choice history review, discussed strategies, and talked about how to take notes/study in order to enhance memory retention.

We discussed a basic methodology for the student to use in recalling relevant facts for his essays. The specific content used was the Aztec period which was the most recently covered unit for him. The student knows the material and will work to strengthen his recall ability. I gave him tasks to complete to prepare for our next session. The last thirty minutes were spent discussing English literature and composition. For our future sessions, we will be spending the first hour of the session doing world history work and the last thirty minutes on English.
