...a tutor, I aim to make learning exciting and relevant to children. One of the greatest challenges facing young students is that information is presented to them in a stale, inaccessible way. Specifically in the context of standardized testing, they are asked to memorize and regurgitate information without truly grasping its content; such a style makes it impossible for students to approach unfamiliar problems and think critically, and often contributes to their discouragement and their...

Often, our instructors will not give us the opportunity or proper context to become motivated to get involved in our education. GRE Verbal Tutoring FAQ
Are you looking to improve your score on the Verbal Reasoning section of the GRE? Whether you're just starting to take practice tests or are preparing to retake the exam, a personal GRE Verbal Reasoning tutor can help. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with talented certified GRE tutors who have demonstrated their knowledge of this standardized exam inside out. These tutors are selected for their excellent tutoring and communication skills. Not only do they know the material, but they can teach it as well. A skilled tutor can craft a personalized study plan for your test prep, building on what you already do well and focusing on areas in which you can improve.
Scoring well on the GRE is critical, and even required by many institutions, for placement in graduate programs in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Varsity Tutors is here to help you perform to the best of your ability and to make sure you're admitted to the graduate program of your choice by connecting you to a highly-qualified GRE Verbal Reasoning tutor. Verbal Reasoning is one of three sections on the exam (the others being Analytical Writing and Quantitative Reasoning). If you are experiencing problems related to the Verbal Reasoning section, a certified GRE tutor will design a plan to help you tackle those difficulties. The personalized, face-to-face meetings you will have with your tutor are an essential aspect of the test prep process and will leave you feeling confident in your ability to ace the exam. A GRE Verbal Reasoning tutor can help identify the specific parts of the verbal section that are giving you trouble, whether it happens to be the Reading Comprehension passages, the Text Completion questions, or the Sentence Equivalence questions.
Do the GRE Reading Comprehension passages confuse you? GRE Verbal Reasoning tutoring can help you map out the passages as you read them, identify the main argument and structure, and tackle the questions one at a time. The passages on the exam are taken from various subjects, some of which you may not be familiar with. However, a dedicated tutor can demonstrate test-taking strategies that can help you analyze the passage and arrive at the correct answers. The Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence fill-in-the-blank questions can be equally frustrating, and test a completely different set of knowledge and skills. You may be overwhelmed with vocabulary you don't know, or unsure about which word works best in a given context. A GRE Verbal Reasoning tutor can model strategies that can help you quickly and accurately memorize new vocabulary words and their meanings, as well as tactics for eliminating answer choices that are incorrect.
Private GRE tutoring offers students numerous advantages. The one-on-one environment of private tutoring allows each session to be tailored to your specific needs. Concepts you know can be skipped over in order to focus on the question types and sections where you can improve the most. Your tutor can help you focus on just the types of problems you'll encounter when you take your exam. In addition, a seasoned GRE tutor can teach you test-taking skills that you can apply to the Verbal Reasoning section and any other test you may encounter in the future. Varsity Tutors can help you to connect with some of the best GRE tutors all across the country, and will help you find the one who suits your specific needs. Recent GRE Verbal Tutoring Session Notes
Exam verbal practice: reading comprehension strategies (word circling/underlining, process of elimination). Next time, we'll practice scansion and vocab questions.
Worked through first 14 verbal questions on the Verbal practice test #1 from the Review book, with special attention to word roots, trigger words, and finding conclusions (review of techniques introduced since beginning tutoring.)
Today, the student and I discussed strategies for the sentence completion and passage sections. We primarily reviewed the verbal section of the exam. We also discussed how to write a good essay, quickly.
The student and I went over the general format of the verbal section of the test. This session, we focused specifically on building vocabulary skills, using resources like the prep books and other prep websites. We focused on sentence equivalence questions, and worked with a variety of strategies for answering these questions (process of elimination, predicting an answer, identifying context clues, etc.).
The student has requested that we focus on the verbal portion of the test, as she is comfortable with the quantitative section. We worked on strategies for the sentence completion type of questions. She is struggling with vocabulary a bit, so I suggested that she study from a list of "word families" which groups related words rather than trying to memorize individual definitions for a long list of words because she is taking the test in less than a month.
Today the student had her book, so we went over the prep book's section on Verbal Reasoning, the section of the GRE on which the student thought she'd need the most work. We did many sample problems of all types of question on this section. She has a good grasp of the mechanics of the questions, and of the reading comprehension sections; she does need to work on her vocabulary, which is the element of the verbal section that we will focus on going forward.
