Recent Government Tutoring Session Notes
During this session, we prepped for the student's upcoming project presentation that was scheduled for the next day. We put together note sheets for reference when she is presenting and practiced at the end of the session.
Today the student and I had our last meeting together. Since we previously completed a study guide for the student, we decided to spend our time studying the chapter questions a few at a time, to figure out what areas he needs to study most before his test, which is online and open-book.
During this session, the student and I completed quizzes and one exam from the English section of his classes, and we completed quizzes from the government section. He had a more difficult time with the government section, though he did finish three quizzes.
We focused on the students American Government assignment during the session. He completed two thirds of the assignment on his own primarily the short answer and definition portions. We reviewed and expanded his answers as needed focusing on providing examples when necessary. We then outlined and discussed the essay writing portions of the exam. We created a detailed outline for his first essay and brainstormed contemporary examples that he could include. The student has only one major assignment for the following week which is a government exam. In the next session we are planning on reviewing either his sociology notes or studying for his exam.
Today we made an outline for the student's government paper. We went over his assignments for the rest of the week and we read a poem and analyzed it. We also discussed the screenplay that he has to write by Friday.
During my first session with the student, we started with some "icebreakers" and a discussion about his school and classes. After learning that he was studying the Bill of Rights, I played a fun rap song about the first 10 amendments to the Constitution. We then outlined major Supreme Court cases involving civil liberties and made flashcards to practice. We finished by playing the song 41 Shots by Bruce Springsteen, a powerful song that relates to illegal searches and seizures.
