We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

Online SSAT- Elementary Level Tutoring review by Michael
Introduced the student to general facts and overview of the exam, study guide book, scoring, and test strategies. Clarified his goals & discovered most fearful about math sections. Clarified my expertise in verbal sections. Walked through categories of info and chapter divisions in study guide, especially verbal sections. Talked about some ways to learn vocabulary over next month. Had him take section 2 of practice test 1 on a 25 minute timer. Debriefed about section as whole, analyzed student answer/reasoning versus correct answer/reasoning question by question, and discussed strategies. Assigned the student to work through math related chapters 14 & 15 before next session.

The student is coming along well. His vocabulary has especially shown great improvement this summer. He is consistently showing improved math and assessment scores in the low to mid 700s. A bit more work is needed to make these scores consistently repeatable, but he's well on his way.

The shift in session time definitely helped both of our focus. The student's assigned exam English section had very few incorrect answers; however, he admitted to running out of time before he could reach the last page, which hurt his score unnecessarily. We will be working on his pacing.

It has been quite some time since the student and I met for a session. We worked through chapter 10 (trigonometry) of the test prep math book together. I wrote some side worksheets for the math. Then we moved on to science and worked on telling the story of the passage/diagrams before attempting the questions

Online SSAT- Elementary Level Tutoring review by Courtney
Today the student and I worked on the math, science, and reading sections of a practice exam with a primary focus on math. In the math section we are working on spending more time with questions that require simpler math and keeping his spirits up when he encounters math he hasn't seen before (such as pre-calculus). Generally he understands the questions, but has difficulty applying the appropriate math to solve them. We worked on identifying the type of math involved with each question to give him clues as to how to solve them. He is doing much better in the science section after we discussed taking more time on each question to really consider the different choices. He didn't lose very much time but his accuracy increased. The reading section was also an improvement. He struggles most with the prose section, but does very well with fact-based passages. Overall he is improving in the areas he was most worried about from his previous exam.

The student and I worked on the English section today, discussing the different types of tricks to use against the clock and how to recognize double-negatives, redundancy, tense switches, and improper conjunctions in sentences.
