Based on my IQ, I should barely have graduated from college. I started looking into tutoring when I was looking for opportunities to earn money during the summers while I'm working on my Ph.D. in Philosophy. It seemed like an ideal set-up for me since I teach at a community college and I wanted to continue developing those teaching skills in my job. It also allows me to set a schedule that works with my ongoing classes. Here's a more in depth look at my career in academia: I entered my first college (Furman University) with the plan of double-majoring in English and Computer Science because I love to read and love technology. I didn't have any clear career path in mind, but I thought I'd start by following what I'm enthusiastic about. My experience in those classes showed me a darker side of those studies: books like Middlemarch and debugging. Ugh. I found my philosophy class, which I took as part of the core curriculum, to be far more interesting. So I followed that passion to three (I'm m still working on the third) graduate degrees. The first was an M.A. in Philosophy from Texas Tech University and the second was an M.S. in Ethics and Public Policy from Suffolk University. After the second Master's I settled in to do some adjunct professor work at Collin College. It's difficult to earn a living as an adjunct professor. The pay is terrible and it's hard to find enough hours to make a living wage, so I had a second job as a building manager. So, I decided to go back to school to earn my doctorate so that I can work full time in my field at a decent wage. Now I'm in the Ph.D. in philosophy program at the University of South Florida. I'm experiencing some success in the program: besides earning straight As, I was invited to present one of my papers at the University of Hawaii this year. That's where my profile pic was taken. When I'm not occupied with school work, I like playing the piano and guitar, reading (mostly) Sci-Fi novels, kayaking and fishing with my wife, playing video games, and playing strategy board games (they've gotten a lot better since Monopoly).I hope that gives you a sense of who I am and that we can have a productive tutoring relationship in the future!

I received a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in Philosophy from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in May 2015. I then stayed on for a Master of Arts in Philosophy, which I received in August 2016. University programs in English and Philosophy are designed to promote creativity, adaptability, and technical proficiency in reading and writing, with a special emphasis in Philosophy on clarity. These are values I have internalized, and I believe my work reflects that: for instance, in 2014, my GRE Verbal Reasoning scores placed me in the top 1% of test-takers.I moved to Brooklyn at the beginning of February. I have really enjoyed getting acquainted with the Greater New York area, and I've been lucky to attend some excellent live music shows. In the rest of my free time I enjoy reading (both literature and philosophy), making music on my synthesizer, and spending time in conversation with my friends.I look forward to the opportunity to work with you and your student. Between us I am sure we will learn quite a lot!

I'm a graduate of Hamline University, where I acquired a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing. I also did graduate work at Hamline in Language Arts education. I was a student of music for many years, and have a Bachelor's degree in Music from the University of Colorado, Boulder where I studied voice. Having been a serious student of music in the past, I of course enjoy classical music; my favorites these days are the Baroque masters.I have been teaching English courses online for several years now, and it's been an excellent job for me as a parent since the hours are so flexible. Now that my child is grown, I'm interested in spreading my wings a bit and meeting students face to face as a tutor. My favorite subjects to teach are English Composition, Rhetoric, and research essays. I also am a grammar nerd and love to help students build their skills in this area.I love animals of all kinds and have a dog and a cat, who don't really get along with each other! I spend too much time breaking up their little spats, I think. But I wouldn't give them up, mostly because they're so entertaining.I also enjoy baking and cooking ethnic foods, and since I live near the Mississippi River I take advantage of our running paths on a regular basis. I love to be outside in the fresh air.

I earned a BA in Philosophy and Italian Literature form the University of Pittsburgh and an MS in Logic and Computation from Carnegie Mellon University. I have taught and served as a teaching assistant for undergraduate level courses in philosophy at both Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pennsylvania. This gives me first-hand knowledge of what level of academic excellence is expected at some of the best universities in the country. All of these courses, with the exception of logic, required students to write essays. A substantial portion of my time was dedicated to helping students improve their academic writing. This experience taught me the most common problems students encounter in academic writing including lack of clarity, redundancy, the inability to structure an argument, and the most common spelling and grammar mistakes. It also forced me to develop ways of getting students to identify and correct these errors. This involved spending a lot of individual time with students and helping them through the revision process. The most important aspect of this was getting them to see that writing is a process. This understanding generally made them more patient and open to feedback.Philosophy and logic are both exceptionally abstract subjects. Teaching them to undergraduates requires patience and the ability to explain things as simply as possible. It is also important to recognize the signs of confusion. Students do not always tell you when they are confused (and sometimes they themselves do not think they are confused), and so it is vital to maintain interaction with students and to continually check for understanding. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenges of teaching, and I always conveyed my enthusiasm for the subject and the learning process. This is vital to maintain students' motivation and to keep their attention. For my efforts, I was nominated by my students for the Graduate Student Teaching Award at Penn.Since that time, I have continued teaching as a private tutor in English, Writing, Italian, and Philosophy. I have also edited countless undergraduate essays. I particularly enjoy helping students with the writing process. It is extremely satisfying to aid in the development of an important lifelong skill. When I am not tutoring, I enjoy cooking. I am particularly interested in traditional methods of food processing from all over the world. Many of my favorite recipes have been given to me by my students. My other great love is travel. I have lived in Europe and travel often to Italy where I have family.

I am a graduate of the public history program at the University of South Carolina, where I received an M.A. I am pursuing a career in historic preservation, because buildings and structures crucial to maintaining the culture of local and national society are constantly threatened. Throughout my graduate and undergraduate education, I worked in a teaching capacity, teaching sections of United States and Latin American History courses. With high scores being so crucial to student acceptance to top college programs, I am passionate about sharing the tips and strategies that helped me succeed on standardized tests. I especially enjoy teaching the Math sections of exams, because the subject boils down to learning and memorizing strategies that can be broadly applied. My strategy for standardized test preparation comes down to preparing the student not only for the material itself, but also for the experience of taking the tests. Success on standardized tests is as much an emotional exercise as an intellectual one. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the piano, card and board games, and watching NBA basketball.
