I am a undergraduate student at Cornell University. I am studying computer science in the College of Engineering. I have been tutoring in all subjects since 9th grade, mostly computer science and mathematics and SAT. My teaching philosophy is based on hands-on learning, and the motto of 'practice makes perfection'. The more you face the problem head on and break it into smaller pieces, the easier the problem becomes to solve. In my spare time, I like to go outside on runs and play basketball with my friends Hobbies: writing, music, art, movies, books, reading

I'm from a small town in southeast Michigan, where I went to high school before moving to Nashville for university. I just graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor's degree in neuroscience and Russian. During my time in high school and college, I tutored in a volunteer capacity on a wide range of subjects, from English and essay editing to calculus to ACT prep. I am hoping to spend the next year traveling (I am currently living in Bucharest, Romania!) before applying to medical school. Aside from tutoring, I would be happy to commiserate with you about the stresses of applying to higher education.

I am currently a senior at Harvard College where I study chemistry, and I'll be attending Columbia Medical School next year. I have years of experience tutoring college students in math (mostly calculus) and chemistry including both general and organic chemistry. In addition, I am very familiar with all sections of the SAT and ACT having prepared several high school students for these tests. I believe that every student is capable of boosting his or her baseline score on these tests, so long as he or she works hard to get to know the format of the tests and the most popular types of questions. I tutor because I love seeing students develop a genuine passion for the subjects they once disliked (such as math and science), once they understand the power of these subjects and their applications to the real world.

I am still asked by my friends to help them with their math and chemistry homework. I get calls from home asking if I can get on Skype to explain something, and I am always happy to oblige. I understand that my education is a privilege, and I want to do my part to help every person have the same opportunities that I had.

I am a rising Sophomore at Princeton University. I am majoring in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, most likely with a minor in Computer Science. During my Junior and Senior years of High School, I tutored a few students on a regular basis. I specialize in Math and Science. More specifically, my strongest subjects are Algebra 1/2/3, Geometry, Trigonometry and ACT Science. I have always found the maths and sciences to be both the most interesting subjects, but also the most applicable to real world problems - this is why I chose to major in what I did. Because I usually tutor in Math, I often tutor in the style of showing how to do a few problems step by step, and then having the student try a few more difficult problems, asking questions along the way. I do this because in my experience, this is the best way to learn and prepare for Math related exams. Outside of academics I play Viola, enjoy running and exercising to stay healthy, and listening to all kinds of music.

I am a rising sophomore majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Data Science at Rice University in Houston, TX. Naturally, my favorite subjects to teach are math and computer science, particularly programming languages like Python, Java, and Scratch. I have found great enrichment in these seemingly daunting areas, and I hope to make them more easily accessible for others. As a founding member of the Ready for College Leadership club (RCL), I mentored high school freshmen and sophomores to help them succeed in high school and prepare for college admissions, while also providing academic aid. The best part of working with students is watching them grow not just as a learner, but also as a thinker. I always encourage students to be curious and let their true interests be incorporated into lessons. In my spare time, I love learning languages; I am a heritage Spanish speaker and a self-taught Portuguese speaker. I also enjoy playing guitar and practicing new songs to sing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Students often struggle with limits and continuity early in the course, as these concepts require a shift from algebraic thinking to theoretical reasoning. Other frequent pain points include understanding the relationship between derivatives and integrals, mastering related rates problems, and applying calculus concepts to real-world scenarios on the free-response section.
A tutor can help you build conceptual understanding rather than just memorizing procedures—when you truly understand why the chain rule works or what a derivative represents geometrically, application problems become much more manageable.
Most students benefit from starting serious test prep 8-10 weeks before the AP exam in May. Begin by reviewing foundational algebra and function concepts, then work through each major calculus unit systematically. In your final 3-4 weeks, shift toward full-length practice tests under timed conditions to build test-taking stamina and identify remaining weak areas.
Personalized tutoring can help you create a targeted study plan based on your current strengths and gaps, rather than spending equal time on every topic. Many students find that focusing on 2-3 weak areas yields better score improvement than general review.
Score improvement depends heavily on your starting point and how consistently you engage with tutoring and practice. Students working with a tutor 1-2 times per week typically see meaningful progress within 4-6 weeks—often a 2-5 point improvement on the AP score. More significant jumps (5-10 points) typically require 8+ weeks of consistent work, especially if you're building conceptual understanding in areas where you've fallen behind.
The AP Calculus exam is scored 1-5, with a score of 3 considered "qualified." Focus on consistent practice and closing specific gaps rather than expecting dramatic overnight improvement.
The AP Calculus exam gives you 3 hours and 15 minutes for 45 questions—roughly 4 minutes per question on the multiple-choice section. However, you should spend less time on straightforward problems to build a buffer for trickier ones. The free-response section requires you to show work, so clarity and organization matter as much as speed.
Practice with full-length timed tests is essential. A tutor can review your practice exams with you, identifying which question types cause you to lose time and helping you develop strategies for pacing. Many students improve their scores significantly just by learning which problems to tackle first and which to skip initially.
The best AP Calculus tutors do more than just review formulas—they help you understand the "why" behind each concept. They can explain limits, derivatives, and integrals from multiple angles, connect abstract ideas to real-world applications, and anticipate which concepts typically confuse students. They're also familiar with the specific format and question types of the AP exam.
Equally important is the ability to diagnose your individual learning gaps and adapt explanations to your style. A great tutor might spend extra time on related rates problems if that's your weak point, rather than assuming you need to review everything equally. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who have proven expertise in AP Calculus and experience helping students improve their scores.
AP Calculus AB covers limits, derivatives, and basic integration—roughly the first two-thirds of calculus. AP Calculus BC covers everything in AB plus additional integration techniques and series. Most students choose AB, which is appropriate for those headed toward non-STEM fields or those building a calculus foundation for engineering. BC is ideal if you're strong in math, planning a STEM major, or want to demonstrate deeper mastery to colleges.
Your current math level and college goals should guide the choice, but be aware that BC moves faster and covers more material. A tutor can help you honestly assess whether you're ready for the accelerated pace and additional concepts.
Test anxiety often stems from feeling unprepared or uncertain about your understanding. The best antidote is genuine confidence built through practice. Taking full-length practice tests regularly (at least 4-5 before exam day) in timed conditions helps normalize the exam format and builds familiarity with question types, which reduces anxiety significantly.
Working with a tutor also provides reassurance—when someone explains a tricky concept multiple times until it clicks, you develop trust in your own understanding. Having a plan for tackling the exam (which sections to do first, when to skip a problem, etc.) also reduces anxiety by giving you structure and control.
