Liverpool 2nd Grade Writing Tutoring FAQ
Second grade is a time of developmental learning milestones. During second grade, students are still in the process of mastering both the spoken and the written English language. Syntax, grammar, spelling, and other linguistic structures may not yet be intuitive and first need to be taught and then built upon. The developmental significance of learning to read and write at an early age is monumental, as these tools will eventually allow your child to communicate and interact effectively with the world in which we live. Literacy and compositional aptitude are prerequisite to almost any occupation or educational opportunity that they may choose in the future. Building these foundations early is a critical step toward bolstering academic confidence and leading your student toward success in their future academic pursuits.
Second grade, however, is still very early in your child's formal educational experience. Although these developmental years are critical for developing skills in language arts, the resources offered in a classroom environment may not mesh or align with your child's particular learning needs. Maybe your child is having a hard time with word choice, grammar, punctuation, or sentence structure. Or perhaps your child simply needs assistance picking a topic and writing on point. At such as young age, it can be difficult to narrow down all the choices in their heads and formulate their ideas onto the paper in a written form. If you are concerned that your child may be falling behind, or perhaps if your child simply does not find his or her classroom content engaging or challenging enough to hold their interest, Varsity Tutors can help you connect with a private tutor who may be able to help.
Writing tutoring is designed to address the Common Core standards and developmental expectations corresponding to second grade. We work to help connect your child with a tutor who can adapt his or her lesson plans and teaching methods to your student's unique learning styles and habits. Writing is often a highly personal and independent activity, and a classroom environment can be a very difficult atmosphere in which to learn compositional skills. Teachers must divide their attention between the needs and particular writing tendencies of numerous students at once. With one-on-one writing tutoring, your student can receive immediate, personalized feedback about their writing. Your child's tutor can walk him or her through the writing process, addressing concerns ranging from word choice to grammatical conventions and basic punctuation.
Varsity Tutors can match your child with a hand-picked professional instructor that can meet with your child anywhere you choose and wherever they are the most comfortable. That may be in the comfort of your child's own home, at their school, or at a neutral location such as a park or local library. If preferred, arrangements can be made to have face-to-face online tutoring sessions using our live learning platform. The choice is up to you, and you can pick what works best for your situation and your child.
Building a positive relationship and association with literary pursuits can serve your child well in future years of schooling, so tutors work to keep lessons intuitive and enjoyable while still building lifelong compositional skills that students can take back with them into the classroom. The tutor will strive to keep the student engaged and focused on the task at hand while maintaining an atmosphere that is professional, yet still relatable and fun. Varsity Tutors believes learning should be individualized and personalized. By enlisting the help of a private writing tutor, you can build your child's skills and confidence. Recent Liverpool 2nd Grade Writing Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I read and worked on the first two chapters in A Catcher in the Rye, answering a couple questions about the main character and writing a short essay. He has some good opening ideas about the book and is ready to get a lot out of reading it.
Today we worked on reading passages and answering questions. We talked about main idea and then we worked on a social studies project. It was a good session overall and the student thinks he did well on his last quiz so hopefully improvements are happening.
The student and I have been working through the stages of writing and the use of a rubric as a self evaluation tool. Last week we began an exploration of butterflies and began drafting ideas based solely on the student's knowledge. Today we expanded those ideas by conducting research online. She read/listened to the informational text and told me things that we needed to include in our book that we didn't list last week. We worked on drafting a title for her book and also creating the illustrations for the front cover. We periodically stopped to check on our progress via the simple rubric we created but this is all working towards increasing her writing skills to align more closely with exam standards.
We will continue working on creating her informational book and using the rubric to evaluate her work.
The student worked on writing and spelling this session. We took our first spelling test and he scored an 11 out of 16. We practiced spelling the words he got incorrect. We then worked on writing. He was given a prompt on picking a superpower and explaining why and what he would do with that power.
We finished writing samples to be turned into the 2nd grade teacher at start of school year; we practiced mental math facts.
Extra practice at home: practice spelling sight words (identified five challenging words to have the student practice); use math flashcard app to practice mental math facts.
Practiced capital M and lowercase A in cursive for writing his name. We proofed his writing about soccer camp from last week and made corrections where necessary. The student did some brainstorming with me and wrote a full paragraph about outer space. We reviewed our writing reminders, did a word and sentence count, and a word length and sentence length exercise.
