My entire educational background was spent in science and math classes, often it wasn't easy for me, so I understand what it's like to struggle with something and feel like you will never understand. But if you work the problems enough times and never quit you'll get through it. And asking for help is never a bad thing, no one has ever gotten through all of this without help.

I recently graduated cum laude from New York University with a double major in Psychology (with honors) and Philosophy, in addition to a Creative Writing minor. In the next few years, I intend to continue my education by pursuing a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. In my free time, I generally prefer to spend it writing, cooking, and playing guitar. As the son of two public school teachers, I quickly learned to recognize the value of a quality education, and the far greater value of using one's knowledge to help others. After taking assorted private tutoring jobs throughout high school to earn some pocket money, I worked in the College Learning Center and as a academic tutor at the Salk School of Science during my time at NYU to help with the cost of tuition. While I feel confident in my ability to help students excel in a variety of subjects, I personally find it most rewarding to work with teenagers preparing to apply for college. This period can be extremely important for a young person's future success, and I know firsthand how overwhelming the pressure to succeed can get when you feel like you have to face it alone. With my passion for writing, I can aid my charges in overcoming character limits and the discomfort of talking about themselves, allowing their personal statements to express their best selves in an eloquent and concise manner. For standardized testing, I can use my experience to provide tips not only to improve vocabulary, reading and math skills, but also about how to deal with the unique problems caused by the nature of these tests.Regardless of one's individual learning needs, I believe that calm, patient guidance and unwavering encouragement can benefit any student. Whatever assistance you may need, I am here to help.

I am currently working towards a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, with a focus on probability and statistics, at the University of California, San Diego. I've tutored mathematics when I was in high school for a year, have informally tutored friends and family, and am currently tutoring a student taking Algebra 2 in community college. I tutor math up to Calculus 2, SAT II Math, and SAT test prep. My favorite subject to tutor is math because I love problem solving and the precise logical clarity of math. I also sometimes end up conceptualizing concepts in a different or more fundamental way than I did previously, which leads me to understand the subject more deeply even while I am tutoring it. I try to tutor in a way that involves asking the student questions and leading them to discover the answer/procedure for themselves, so that they understand why they are using certain methods and can apply them to novel situations rather than depending on rote memorization. Outside of academia, I enjoy playing music (guitar and drums), and although I listen to all kinds of music, I primarily enjoy playing blues, jazz, and rock. I also like to read (I was definitely a bookworm as a child) both fiction and non-fiction. My favorite fiction author is by far Proust, and my interests in non-fiction include math, music, and politics.

I'm a Bay Area environmental policy professional working for an organic fruit & vegetable distributor in San Francisco. I discovered my passion for working with students while I served abroad in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic. As a student of languages since I was 6 years old, studying Spanish and Russian, I'm familiar with the difficulties of language study and have a lot of experience working with students to overcome these obstacles to learning. When I am not working, I spend my time reading, taking online courses in environmental and water policy subjects, and cooking. I'm also a member of an AfroCuban amateur dance company and avid salsa dancer.

AP German Language and Culture Tutor • +43 Subjects
I am originally from Germany and moved to San Diego in 2015. In Germany I studied Sports Science, English (English as a Second Language)and Educational Science. I have successfully received my German State Examination, which is equivalent to a Master's Degree at American universities, in all three fields of study mentioned above (University Degree with Distinction). After that I have worked as an English (ESL) as well as Physical Education teacher at German secondary schools for over 7 years, teaching students grades 5 through 12. On top of that, I was responsible for organizing a school exchange with a Chinese high school and also to accompany the group of German students on a 2-week-trip to China. With all that being said, I love teaching and offering as many opportunities as possible to students to gain experience that they can use in real life.As a teacher at secondary schools, it is often challenging to keep track of the needs of every single student in the classroom. Yet, the rigorous education at German university to become a teacher has supplied me with a range of teaching methods and strategies and thus I have been able to recognize specific needs in students and to implement appropriate lesson plans that take into account their individual learning speed, learning channel as well as their strengths and weaknesses.Tutoring students on a one-on-one basis helps even more to pick up the student where they are, in other words to find out their individual skill level and build from there. As mentioned earlier, I enjoy helping students to achieve success and to overcome problems in a fun, creative and sustainable way.In my free-time, I love being active and spending time outdoors, especially enjoying endurance sports.

I recently graduated magna cum laude from UCLA with a BS in Applied Mathematics with a minor in Chinese. I have about two years of experience in tutoring students. I tutor high school and college level mathematics and SAT/ACT preparation. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, the subjects that interest me the most are calculus, college level mathematics, and test prep. I have a calm, adaptive tutoring style. I revise my tutoring strategies to fit each student's unique traits and I believe that a calm demeanor causes students to be less stressed, which in turn improves their performance. In my spare time, I enjoy following 49ers football and playing obscure computer games.
