I earned a BA in Philosophy and Italian Literature form the University of Pittsburgh and an MS in Logic and Computation from Carnegie Mellon University. I have taught and served as a teaching assistant for undergraduate level courses in philosophy at both Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pennsylvania. This gives me first-hand knowledge of what level of academic excellence is expected at some of the best universities in the country. All of these courses, with the exception of logic, required students to write essays. A substantial portion of my time was dedicated to helping students improve their academic writing. This experience taught me the most common problems students encounter in academic writing including lack of clarity, redundancy, the inability to structure an argument, and the most common spelling and grammar mistakes. It also forced me to develop ways of getting students to identify and correct these errors. This involved spending a lot of individual time with students and helping them through the revision process. The most important aspect of this was getting them to see that writing is a process. This understanding generally made them more patient and open to feedback.Philosophy and logic are both exceptionally abstract subjects. Teaching them to undergraduates requires patience and the ability to explain things as simply as possible. It is also important to recognize the signs of confusion. Students do not always tell you when they are confused (and sometimes they themselves do not think they are confused), and so it is vital to maintain interaction with students and to continually check for understanding. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenges of teaching, and I always conveyed my enthusiasm for the subject and the learning process. This is vital to maintain students' motivation and to keep their attention. For my efforts, I was nominated by my students for the Graduate Student Teaching Award at Penn.Since that time, I have continued teaching as a private tutor in English, Writing, Italian, and Philosophy. I have also edited countless undergraduate essays. I particularly enjoy helping students with the writing process. It is extremely satisfying to aid in the development of an important lifelong skill. When I am not tutoring, I enjoy cooking. I am particularly interested in traditional methods of food processing from all over the world. Many of my favorite recipes have been given to me by my students. My other great love is travel. I have lived in Europe and travel often to Italy where I have family.

I have been an educator throughout my adult life--as a trainer, coach, teacher, and tutor.Over the past 20 years, all of my work as an educator, both as a classroom teacher and as a tutor, has been with non-native speakers of English from a wide variety of countries and languages.I have lived and worked in seven countries, and I have traveled to many others. In doing so, I have enjoyed, most of all, the wonderful opportunities to meet local people and participate in their cultures. I became an English teacher because I knew my work would enable me to enjoy even more cross-cultural experiences without leaving home!A have a bachelor's degree in education, a master's degree in speech communication, and a master's degree in teaching English as a second language. In addition, I have two second-language teaching certificates, one from an agency in Spain and one from a program in the United States.I have considerable, relevant education, training, and experience in my field. I'm skilled in all aspects of second language learning (grammar, writing/composition, reading, and speaking/listening), but my particular interest is oral communication, including small- and large-group presentations. As a facilitator of learning, I am known for my empathy, my sensitivity, my patience, and my kindness. Also, students/clients appreciate my careful needs assessments, as well as my dedication to achieving positive results effectively and efficiently.

In 2012 I graduated magna cum laude from George Washington University with a major in Philosophy and a minor in Chinese language and literature. Since then, I have gained significant experience tutoring while teaching English in Shenzhen, China. I am comfortable teaching in a wide variety of subjects, and am especially confident in English, writing, Mandarin Chinese, and LSAT prep. I have found that a relationship of respect and equality with students is essential to a worthwhile tutoring experience. I pride myself on my ability to break down difficult concepts and create ways to understand them. My schedule is flexible and so is my teaching style--I will tailor my approach based on whether the focus is on improving test scores, classroom performance, or general knowledge. I prefer to meet in a public area near the university, but if necessary can arrange to meet elsewhere. I look forward to hearing from you!

I have been tutoring for over five years and would love the opportunity to work with you to help you to not only achieve your immediate goals (passing a class, test, etc), but also foster a deeper understanding of the subject matter that will help you into the future. I'm certified to teach from kindergarten to grade 12. The liberal arts curriculum I took at St. John's University has ensured that I not only can tutor students in technical fields but also humanities. I am a savvy test taker and would be able to teach your child not only the content necessary to excel at an exam and other standardized tests, but also how to utilize strategies to maximize efficiency and accuracy. In teaching, I enjoy connecting the subject matter to topics that would not necessarily seem relevant to the lesson in order to engage the student on a deeper level. I can tutor many subjects, Algebra, Algebra 2, Algebra 3/4, Arithmetic, College Algebra, Elementary Math, Geometry, Linear Algebra, Middle School Math, Pre-Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, Nutrition, Physical Science, AP Spanish Language, AP Spanish Literature and Culture, Spanish, Spanish 1, Spanish 2, Spanish 3, Spanish 4, Advanced Placement, Essay Editing, Grammar and Mechanics, Phonics, Public Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University in 2021. My major was Sociology and Educational Psychology. After I graduated, I spent a year and a half working as an after-school site director at the YMCA while becoming a Texas certified English teacher. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, especially as it relates to literature (reading and dissecting, as well as creative writing). In my experience, I often see the most success (and excitement for learning) in my students with the games and various fun ways I use to encode and recall information. I am a passionate advocate of education, believing it to be the best ticket to a happy and successful life, and I try to inspire this desire for learning in all of my students. In my spare time, I enjoy reading that which enriches my life, writing poetry, video games, and spending time with my cats and dogs.

I am an award-winning writer with nearly 2 years of experience tutoring English, reading comprehension, academic writing, essay editing and ELA Regents test preparation. In August 2015, I earned my BA in English from Hunter College and graduated Cum Laude with departmental honors.Currently, I serve as an education specialist at Opportunity Charter School. Here, I work one-on-one with students, most of whom have special needs, to improve their grades and standardized test scores; many students have seen significant improvements in their writing scores since receiving my help.Prior to working with OCS, I was a peer tutor for the Hunter College Reading and Writing Center; in only one semester, many students who struggled with writing were able to earn As on their papers! My goal is to instill a love of learning in each and every student I have the honor of working with. I use the Socratic method to evaluate a student's needs and potential for improvement, and implement positive reinforcement to boost their confidence and desire to learn. I approach challenges with patience, enthusiasm and clarity, and encourage my students to do the same.I look forward to working with you!
