Teaching, by nature, is a controversial subject. The tools used to teach basic math, scientific theories, even the base curriculum, are consistently subject to change and criticism. My primary interest in tutoring comes from my background in history (BA from Brown University) and creative writing (MFA from The City College of New York).I remember the fright and joy I felt the first time I worked with students. It was in a shabby classroom in India, at a volunteer organization called the Lha Institute. The students were teenage Tibetan refugees and one monk from Thailand who was in town to learn English. The class spoke a mixture of bad English, Tibetan, and Nepali, but they had signed up for my creative writing seminar anyway. Some of them couldn't write or were afraid to share their writing, and some of them were more than eager to read personal essays about what was meaningful to them. At the end of the seminar, they gave me a gift of a pen and a special writing pad. Given their economic circumstances, this was a tremendous gift from them.

I recently graduated Magna Cum Laude from Bryn Mawr College with my BA in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and with a minor in Health Studies. I hope to attain my Master's in Anesthesiology Assisting and pursue a career in healthcare. I've tutored high school and middle school students in various subjects while in high school through both the National Honor Society and National Science Honor Society programs. While in college, I was a Chemistry peer mentor and helped many students throughout their courses in that department. I've also worked as a tutor for Chegg for about 4 years and have worked with over 1000 students, garnering over 300 positive reviews during my time there. My tutoring style is very patient and affirming. I know that students can be afraid to say their answers sometimes because they are afraid to be wrong but I encourage this! It's the only way to learn and it helps build their confidence.

I graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. I also studied Philosophy, History, and Sociology. As an undergraduate I became a writing tutor and coached other college students toward improving their general study skills (time management, test prep, note taking, etc.) At the end of my degree, I spent a summer studying Literature and Writing at the University of Cambridge. Upon returning to the United States, I began working with at-risk teens in residential treatment centers in Utah. Those inspiring experiences reignited my interest in teaching, so I enrolled in a university licensing program. Since completing the program, I have taught middle school and high school both in Washington D.C. and Salt Lake City.I currently work full-time developing online education programs for a non-profit in Arlington. I have passion for all things related to education, but I find that tutoring is the most fulfilling. Tutoring allows me to help others improve their knowledge and skills, but many other rewards come as a result of my tutoring philosophy. My tutoring philosophy centers around relationships. Trusting and inspiring relationships enable greater academic success because tutoring influences often impact the views and decisions of students beyond the tutoring realm. I love to see my students flourish in other aspects of life as a direct result of their studies. I believe that rigorous study accompanied with an inspiring tutoring relationship leads to the best outcomes for all individuals involved.I have taught History, World Geography, Humanities, and Government, but I most enjoy helping others improve their writing. Writing is a difficult craft to master and holds endless possibilities. I enjoy the outdoors and am most content being in nature with a good book or talking with friends around a campfire. I am an 80's enthusiast and appreciate thoughtful and evocative films. I have driven across the US several times and been to every state but Maine, Alaska, and Hawaii. The highlight of all my travels has been hiking mountains in Scotland while donning a kilt--few better ways exist to get in touch with ones ancestors.I enjoy all aspects of travel, especially for the chance it gives me to gather resonating stories from interesting people from many walks of life.

I am knowledgeable about introductory topics such as descriptive statistics, probability, t-tests, correlation, and analysis of variance. I am also knowledgeable about advanced topics such as multiple regression, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and psychometrics (reliability, validity, item analyses). I also have experience using statistical software such as the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and the R programming language.I am also passionate about helping others learn. While I was earning my Master of Arts in Psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, I was a teaching assistant for an undergraduate psychology research methods course and I mentored undergraduate students interested in working in the mental health field. I guided students through the process of completing their coursework and applying to graduate school. Helping students achieve their dream of becoming therapists was life changing!Learning statistics can be daunting but also rewarding! I am from Atlanta, Georgia, and a fifth year graduate student in a clinical psychology doctoral program at Marquette University, where I also earned my Master's of Science. I graduated from Georgia State University in 2016, earning a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology with departmental distinction. At Marquette I do A LOT of research and it is all about how to help adolescents become more resilient and lead healthy lives. Most of my work focuses on how positive teacher-student relationships can be protective and beneficial for adolescents. This research has really helped me be a more compassionate and engaging teacher and tutor.I have worked with all age groups and taught/tutored everything from canoeing to statistics! I most enjoy tutoring writing. I believe that writing in all forms can open up a world of possibilities and creativity; even scientific writing can be artful. I can also tutor all social sciences, particularly psychology, which is my passion. Additionally, I can help improve confidence and skill in elementary and middle school math, sciences, and reading comprehension, as well as high school history, literature, writing, and biology. I believe learning is beautiful and the magic is in the process! When I am not doing school-related activities, I enjoy trying new restaurants, reading thrillers, cooking, and binge-watching my favorite TV shows on Netflix.
