Certified Tutor

I have a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the State University of New York at Oneonta and a PhD from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. I discovered that I enjoyed teaching when I assisted elementary school teachers while I was in high school, as well as coaching soccer. While in college, my professors noticed that I had an aptitude for conducting research in biology, and encouraged me to earn my PhD, which I did. I have taught several different biology courses and general chemistry at the college level for the past six years. Because of the type of science I do, I am also able to tutor in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. These skills also allow me to help students prepare for entrance exams, such as the SAT and ACT. Although the college setting seems like it is mostly a classroom setting, I had the opportunity to work with students one-on-one, who had diverse learning styles and disabilities. Since working with Varsity Tutors I have truly enjoyed being able to get to know students on a personal level, learn the best method of teaching them, and tailoring lessons to their needs. My overall teaching philosophy is lifelong learning, whether or not I am helping someone with a specific subject or tutoring for test prep I try to connect things to the real world to ignite a spark of interest. While I tutor in many different areas, my favorite subject to tutor in is biology.
