Hello! My name is Benjamin, and I am a Senior at the University of Richmond with a double major in American Studies and Rhetoric/Communication Studies. As indicated on my resume, I have earned high marks in all of my educational endeavors. Outside of school, I love to play and watch sports, particularly basketball and baseball.
I also have significant experience working with youth as a camp counselor and as the coordinator of a Virginia high school program. These youth-oriented leadership experiences have led me to tutoring, and I could not be more excited to start that journey.
A little about my background: I attended a Jewish private school from Kindergarten through fifth grade. My school was well-funded, and a vast majority of my classmates belonged to upper-middle class families.
In sixth grade, I left my Jewish private school and I began my time as a student in the University City School District, or U-City, as it is known colloquially. U-City schools were vastly different from my Jewish school--they were poorly funded, consisted mostly of black students, and a vast majority of students qualified to receive free or reduced-price lunches. Many of my U-City friends had only one parent raising them, forcing them to work long hours after school to help contribute to the family income.
Although U-City was underfunded, the one consistent support that my classmates had was their teachers. U-City's teachers were always there as academic guides, but they often served as parental figures and life coaches when they needed to be. They recognized that, as teachers of underprivileged students at an underfunded school, they would have to step up and be the support that their students needed.
Now in college, I am inspired by my high school teachers (and my current professors) to be that same support, in whatever way works best for the student. In short, I want to help, in any way that I can.
