What is your teaching philosophy?

Not to be cliche, but practice really does make perfect! I believe that with hard work and dedication, you can achieve more than you can ever imagine.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During a first session, I usually introduce myself and get to know my student and their academic goals. Together, my student and I can come up with a tutoring plan that would maximize their learning and help them attain their goals.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I help students become independent learners by helping them figure out the studying techniques that are most beneficial for them. I also stress that regardless of the difficulty of the subject, if you work hard and practice you can achieve knowledge.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I help students stay motivated by relating subject matter to real-life situations and by keeping sessions as fun and interactive as possible.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, I would approach the subject matter from a different perspective that builds on their strengths.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would teach them about breaking down the text. For example, figuring out the main concepts and the supporting evidence. I would also incorporate the use of a graphic organizer.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The most successful strategies I have used are positive reinforcement and instilling a growth mindset in my students. I find that these strategies allow my students to realize their full potential and understand that anything is achievable.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I increase my student's motivation to conquer any subject they are struggling in by relating the subject to the student's interests in order to make the subject more relatable and appealing.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I usually ask the student to rephrase the learned concept in their own words and to come up with their own example of a problem. I may also administer short casual quizzes at the end of a session to make sure that the student has truly understood the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I ask students to summarize the information they have just learned to reinforce their understanding. This method also allows them to build confidence in the material and helps them realize that they know more than they think!

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I like to ask a student where they feel they need the most help. Then, I informally assess and ask to look at past work. If I am tutoring for a specific test, I like to administer it to establish a baseline and determine the student's needs.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I typically use the student's class materials or my laptop to pull up practice questions.
