I am a Social Studies teacher who moved to Chicago last summer. I have a great passion for helping students in Middle and High School with their Social Studies classes. I have experience teaching both American and World History as well as many Social Studies electives including Psychology, Sociology, Cold War History and many more. I am comfortable tutoring in any of theses classes that I previously taught which are included on my resume. What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that there are different ways that each student learns and gets engaged in the subjects they are studying. It is imperative that there is a strong relationship between the teacher and learner so that they can build a trust that is necessary for the most learning to occur.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
The most important thing to do during the first meeting is to get to know the student and begin to establish a trust between the two of us. I would also make sure I get an understanding of what we need to be doing during the tutoring sessions and where we hope to be after an extended period of time.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By working on studying and learning skills that can help them to become better independent learners.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would make sure to build a strong relationship of trust between us and then have incentives for them, whether it is treats or watching movie clips that have to do with the topic we are studying.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would try to connect it to something that is happening currently that they would be able to comprehend more ,or I may try to break it down to its most basic structure and try to build their knowledge on it from there.
