To let students engage with the material, grapple with issues, and learn through critical reasoning and doing.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Assess where they are at from a skill set standpoint and where their weakness are.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By teaching them a framework through which they can set up a strategy to tackle a problem, and then let them tackle the problem. Afterwards provide constructive criticism.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By finding new ways to make the material interesting and providing positive reinforcement.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Find an analogy or a new method to convey the information.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Teach them how to mentally draw connections with new material to known material in their minds to strengthen retention.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Establishing a sense of rapport and trust.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Finding ways to make that subject applicable to areas that interest them.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Critical analysis feedback through oral and written questions.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
By constantly giving positive reinforcement, while creating passion to learn more.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Based on test scores, levels of classes taken, and a base line assessment through oral and written questions.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
You adapt after understanding the needs of the student and coming up with a strategy that would be tailored specifically to their needs.
