I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Aijamal

Certified Tutor

A recent graduate from Anderson University, IN. Born and raised in Kyrgyzstan (Central Asia), where I grew up speaking 2 languages: Kyrgyz and Russian. Started learning English in school and constantly practiced it outside of it. In college, I double majored in Spanish and Theatre where I was a part of Foreign Language Honors Society. Along with learning Spanish, I also took some German classes which I'm planning to continue to study. I've had over 3 years of teaching experience teaching English and Spanish. The age range of students I've worked with was mostly 5 to 23 years old. I've always been an active learner, watching movies with subtitles, singing along with the artists trying to eliminate my accent, and of course, read, read, and read. Although this is my preferred technique to practice the language, I will adjust it to make the experience of learning languages enjoyable and most importantly efficient.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I like to inspire people to love new languages, and I try to make it easier to learn it through practice and entertainment.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to get to know my students. It helps me to create the plan that will be more efficient with each student. Therefore, the first class we might just spend talking (hopefully in the studied language).

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I'm an independent learner myself, so I'll be able to share my tips with the student.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will do my best to explain that concept or maybe take a step back and review the old material that will help a student to understand the skill that he/she has difficulties with.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I start with easier texts and try to make sure that the student understands every single word.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Every lesson, I try to concentrate on different skills and evaluate which skill each student needs to study more.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Audio, video, reading materials, games, etc.
