Tutoring review by Maroun in Groveland, FL
Today started off with the student excitedly sharing his grade on his last exam (chapter 9) and his grade on the take home project, which is worth a test grade. His scores were 93% and 100% respectively. With the 97% on his Chapter 8 test, and doing better on quizzes, he believes his grade in the class is at 88%, and it seems as he can see that he can reach an A in the class. This wasn't so a few weeks ago. I am happy to hear the news and see the excitement in his eyes and voice, as well as see his confidence in his math abilities grow. We discussed the homework for sections 10.4 and 10.5, which had a total of about 55 problems, and that left him with 20 problems for 10.6. It was also more important to spend the time in the first two sections as this was very new material to him. Section 10.4 focused on the tangent ratio (tan), where 10.5 focused on both sine (sin) and cosine (cos) ratios. Section 10.6 was incorporating all 3 ratios along with the Pythagorean Theorem. The beginning of each section was a bit challenging to him; however, as he worked on more problems he seemed to have understood the subject well and was able to complete the problems on his own. A major part of this was his great positive, wanting-to-learn, attitude today. He also was very receptive to my coaching, especially since I mentioned to him that these sections are all about setting up the equations the right way. The computation is the easy part, especially since he must use a calculator for the tan, sin, and cos. I also shared with him an acronym that I was taught in school to help him remember the order of the ratios for each function. This acronym is SOH-CAH-TOA, where SOH is (Sin = Opposite/Hypotenuse), CAH is (Cos = Adjacent/Hypotenuse), and TOA is (Tan = Opposite/Adjacent). Overall, today went great. I glanced over section 10.6 with him just to show him how to get started and instill confidence in him that he should be able to complete it with ease. We meet again Monday to prep for his upcoming Chapter 10 test.

This week the student and I worked on calculating the perimeter and area of various 2D geometrical shapes. She's a genius at it and I'm very proud of her.

The student took a timed quantitative practice test today and scored a 40. She only missed 10/37 questions. She's a little challenged with creating equations for word problems, but all in all, she did VERY well. We will work on the word problem issue in future sessions.

We covered trig functions and conversions. I found that when I would test the student after each concept is covered, that works real well with him. I left him with problems from his booklet to work with. He had a better grade in his last exam.

Tutoring review by Rebecca in Groveland, FL
In our tutoring session, the student worked on some of the different parts of her assignments that she was struggling with, but most questions were cleared up rather quickly. She is demonstrating a great amount of improvement in her math abilities and confidence so far as we've worked together! She's picking things up much quicker than when we first started. We also worked on a vector problem that she had sent me earlier in the week. I had already solved the problem and made a reference guide for how to solve problems like it again. We went over each step of the problem, and she was able to show her understanding of the solution.

Tutoring review by Hector in Groveland, FL
We spent the first 20 minutes or so trying to identify the outstanding characteristics that the student has in order to best craft his essays moving forward. In short, I needed to understand what it was about him that we can sell him on to schools through his writing. The rest of our time was spent looking at and reformulating the opening of his common application personal statement. He had a good core but needed to restructure and add to his opening (arguably the most important section of the essay). He is a talented writer but his essays need more work. His sentences are well written, but do not convey they most that they could. I spent the last few minutes of the session asking him to think about the school specific essays he feels are the most important to him and rank them for priority to work on next time.
