Tutoring review by Max in Bellefontaine Neighbors, MO
Today's session was focused on two sections of the student's current unit, the first being identification of functions of conic sections (circles, ellipses, hyperbola, and parabola), and the second solving systems of equations with different combinations of those functions. We began the first assignment by practicing putting two variable functions into standard form. This required us to review the various standard forms of each conic section and be able to identify based on the degree of each variable, as well as recognizing the significance of the sum/difference between squared variable terms. Practice recognizing the standard forms is something he should be sure to practice on his own. A later part of this first assignment required us to predict the center, as well as the range of the graph of a given conic, which he also had some difficulty recalling. I was able to review it quickly for the purposes of the problems we did, but I would suggest more review in that department as well. The second assignment dealt with solving systems of equations with at least one non-linear function (a conic). We practiced solving these via graphing, substitution, and elimination. The latter two methods he was much more comfortable with, and needed very little reminding or correction on how to proceed. I encouraged him to check if his answers were reasonable by discerning what kind of functions were part of the system, and logically determining the maximum possible number of solutions based on their shape.

Tutoring review by Ralph in Bellefontaine Neighbors, MO
Today was pretty much a math night. We were charged with doing 20 plus math questions. At first, the student was very slow in catching on, but as time went on, we were getting more done more quickly. By the end, we were "high-fiving" regularly. We did get to look at a social studies project that needs to be done, and he felt comfortable after knocking out the math. He explained that he could do it.

We covered how to factor polynomials. The student had a little trouble at first but by the end she was doing really well. She has some extra practice and I've asked her to send me photos of her answers so I can look them over.

We worked on solving inequalities and writing the statement of inequality. The student is doing well in his course. He learns the material very quickly and shows great application of the knowledge. His respectful attitude is always a great encouragement for me, and I look forward to building a great relationship with him.

I met with the student. He received a low score on a math paper for school. We went over all the missed problems. We also worked on other word problems. He knew how to do the problems after reading the directions.
