The student has been learning in class about different ways to represent sets of data effectively. Together we worked on his homework that dealt mainly with frequency tables. He had an easy time setting up the tables and filling out the data, but took a little longer analyzing what the data meant in context. We reviewed terms he had to be familiar with, which included joint, marginal, and relative frequency. Overall he had a good idea about what he was doing, but I could tell that sitting down to do extra practice really cemented the material. I also had the student work through a few problems involving the Pythagorean Theorem since he had to make up a quiz on that topic. He was able to fully understand the concept after doing a couple problems together and then was able to complete them correctly on his own.

The student and I worked on a number of multiple choice AP exam questions from a review book in preparation for his AP exam. He did well on most of these, but needed to better remember certain theorems applicable to the questions. We will meet again on Sunday.

He just finished his test on ratios and word problems. He told me he was having trouble with tough word problems and proportions so we took a look at some practice worksheets. Together, we went through tricky word problems, and I was able to answer some of his difficulties.

We covered geometric concepts with circles. The student seems to do well with definitions and can follow procedures well. The toughest part was finding the equation of circles or tangent lines given an equation. She worked very hard and I have no doubt she will succeed.

First we reviewed the definition of translations, rotations, and reflections. The student was able to define/ explain each. Then we worked mainly on translations within the coordinate grid. We reviewed the Pythagorean theorem to determine the length of a hypotenuse given the units of 2 sides of a right triangle. We worked on the composition theorem, determining 2 rigid movements within the plane. We also defined and worked with preimages and images relating to translations.

We went over a set of review problems in preparation for an upcoming test. The topic was polar coordinates of real and complex numbers. There were certain concepts and rules that I either explained or reinforced. In some cases, there was some training in skills to translate the language of word problems into mathematical statements (this is a challenge area for a lot of students!). The student is a bright student who picks things up quickly and should do well on the test.
