We covered sampling distributions once again, reviewing the exam that the student took on Friday and had returned today. He felt that he may have tried to go through the exam problems too quickly, resulting in simple mistakes. I recommended to him, in response to a couple of his mistakes, that he pull all of the data out of the narrative provided with each problem. It's easier to see what he has to work with that way (instead of getting lost in the verbiage of the word problem). We talked briefly about confidence intervals, which the class is just starting to cover, and we will likely spend more time on that when we meet next time.

Today, the student had a practice assignment for his upcoming assessment in math. For the most part, he was able to recall all of the previous units that the assignment reviewed, but needed some help with using tables to solve systems of equations. He had never seen systems in that format, but when we discussed the connection between equation and table, he was able to determine the answer for himself. I made sure that he was able to do this multiple times before I left. Ultimately, we had been reviewing older units of his algebra class since we started our sessions, and he was used to using the different functions he would be seeing on his assessment.

On our last Geometry session, the student and I completed several practice exams in preparation for her Tuesday final exam. This served as a review of all topics covered. The student is no longer worried about Geometry. She now looks forward to her Summer vacation. The student does not show any struggles, apart from working too fast. As long as she double-checks her answers, an A in this exam is expected.

We reviewed the concepts for the student's quiz during the session. We mainly focused on writing algebraic expressions from word problems. I showed her strategies for approaching each type of problem. Specifically, we talked about looking at the problem on a small scale to start with and then adding in all of the different parts. I also encouraged her to check back over her work for simple math mistakes. By the end of the session, she had a really good grasp on the material.

She finished up her financial unit and was very successful on her quiz, scoring an 86.8% on concepts she previously struggled with. The topics we covered were calculating future value of an account, calculating payment values on a loan, and calculating the present value given a future value. Once she had the formulas down, she did really well!
