Tutoring review by Talia in East Greenbush, NY
The student and I continued our review of series and sequences that we covered the last two sessions. We mainly did a review of everything that he's learned in the chapter so far. I asked him randomly assigned questions from all sections out-of-order to see if the material was sticking with him. I encouraged him to memorize equations. We also briefly went back over information that we covered last session when we moved ahead of the class. These topics included how to find a finite sum from an infinite geometric series, as well as a brief discussion on how to use Pascal's triangle to expand binomials easily. We then moved onto his chemistry class for which he was working on a project that covered a topic learned over the semester. He chose to work with electrochemistry topics where he designed a protocol to test the voltage of various beverages like energy drinks, sugar water, coconut water, salt water, etc. He needed help explaining his results and interpreting his data. We worked on the concepts behind how his experiment worked. We reviewed how electrolytes work and what affects the solubility of an ionic substance vs a non-ionic substance. I left him with a good background in electrochemistry so that he could finish his lab report with his project team. Also, I gave him general tips on what his teacher will most likely be looking for when he grades this report since he said it is worth a whole test grade. Next week, it looks like his class should be moving onto trigonometry so we will review basics that he learned earlier on in the semester and build on them.

The student and I discussed chapters 5 through 8 in I Am Malala. The book is growing more intense with political and cultural details providing a challenge to her close reading skills. At the end of the session we began basic essay planning.

Tutoring review by Joel in East Greenbush, NY
The student needed help with concepts as well the recollection of rules of differentiation in Calculus. He just needs to strengthen his skills with different forms and rules of differentiation, and really look at how a problem is setup before he dives in to solve the problem, and then plug and chug. I will look to give him further examples to help him develop patterns in problem solving, specifically for Calculus.

Tutoring review by Abby in East Greenbush, NY
The concepts we reviewed were dealing with introduction to circles - circumference, measure of an arc, length of an arc, and area. At first, the student was struggling with remembering the formulas and knowing which to use, but after we went through a problem, she was fine. I gave her a small tip on how to remember the difference between area, circumference, and volume formulas. She has been doing very well in geometry thus far.
