My goal is to demystify the writing process and nurture critical analysis to not only increase academic success but create more meaningful life experiences. I firmly believe that the humanities and a liberal education serve to create a rich and more enjoyable life, regardless of what field of work one ends up working in.I earned my Bachelors degree in Comparative Literature from Long Beach State University and a Masters in English from Portland State University while working full time. This blue collar outlook benefitted me by seeing how a liberal arts education dovetailed into situations that were not strictly academic in nature. The critical thinking skills that were fostered in the classroom would translate out into the living world allow me to converse and engage with various members of the community in meaningful ways.My passion is allow students to see this fluidity between the classroom and real world and help them realize the meaningful nature of the humanities. Once this understanding is achieved problems with the writing process and critical analysis become less daunting, since we must simply learn a new way to communicate the ideas we are already engaged with.I enjoy attending all sorts of cultural events, especially those that offer unique and differing opinions from my own. From the country flea market to the civic opera, watching blockbuster films to the independent arthouse offerings, I like to engage with all of the cultural productions that are available to me. I have been a classroom Science teacher for 28 years, and I still love making Science enjoyable and understandable. I will tutor any branch of Science, but I think my favorite to tutor is Chemistry. I really didn't "get" Chemistry in high school, so it makes me happy to help students understand it better than I did. I also really like Earth Science. Maybe, as my mother always said, I really do have rocks in my head!My degrees are in Biology from Villa Maria College, a tiny women's college that doesn't even exist anymore, in Erie, PA, and in Science Education from Clarion University of PA. I taught for many years at a middle school in rural Erie County, PA, and have taught in a number of urban and suburban schools since my family moved to Bucks County. I am PA certified in Biology and General Science, and NJ certified in Biology. I firmly believe science is method of study as well as a body of knowledge, so I try to use all types of educational approaches. I also believe in having fun and laughing while learning.Besides science and teaching, there are few things that I am crazier about than spending time with my family. We have six kids (most of them are grown), three cats, one dog and about a hundred guppies. I love anything that has to do with animals. I love singing and the theater. I am happy watching my garden grow, and remodeling our house with my husband. My favorite TV programs are Big Bang Theory, and anything about science or nature.

My interest and love for Spanish began as a child when I went to my Puerto Rican grandma's house. There was a rich Hispanic culture throughout her home and how she lived. I never understood the Spanish she spoke, but I loved hearing it and have very fond memories of it from my childhood. Fast forward to me at 19-years-old, I chose to serve a 2-year full-time volunteer mission for my church. I had no choice in where they would send me, so I was very grateful when they assigned me to serve in Chile. Those 2 years in Chile gave me an immense love for the Spanish language and a desire to continue using it for the rest of my life.As I returned from my 2-year mission, I decided to apply for a Minor Degree in Spanish at Brigham Young University. There, I qualified to take an advanced-level Spanish-speaking test to waive 16 credits worth of Spanish courses and accelerate my formal Spanish education. I passed the test with an A and continued the rest of my collegiate study taking advanced level Spanish courses. While in the first two years of my college, I also worked as a Spanish teacher in a Training Center that taught young missionaries who were just starting their 2-year service missions for my church. That job engulfed me in the Spanish language daily and encouraged me to improve my Spanish-speaking abilities.Today, I continue to speak the Spanish language frequently after having learned it 8 years ago. I hold a Spanish Minor from Brigham Young University, and I want to continue sharing the benefits of learning the Spanish language with others around me. I'm a fourth year medical student in the Boston University Seven Year Accelerated Medical Program. This year I'm taking a year off to do research in clinical dermatology with Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital; I hope to eventually become a Pediatric Dermatologist!Although I grew up in Illinois, I have spent the majority of the last 6 years in Boston so I feel like it's a second home. At my current school, I specialize in teaching the group of students who failed their 8th grade End of Course exam; I take this group and use high expectations and great relationships to help them pass their 9th grade Algebra 1 STAAR. Over each of the last three years we have improved our scores and put these students on track for a good math experience the rest of their high school career.Personally, I think that math is beautiful. My specialties are Calculus as well as core engineering courses such as Statics, Physics, and Thermodynamics. While these are my favorite subjects, I am also able to tutor many different areas of mathematics, statistics, physics, and biology.When it comes to math and science, each teacher has their own methods or tricks they use to facilitate learning in their students. I like to use these same methods in order to reinforce the concepts that the students have been exposed to in class.
