SAT Subject Test in French Tutoring FAQ

Earning a high score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) Subject Test in French is a fantastic way to demonstrate that you have an excellent grasp on both the basic tenets and advanced concepts of the French language. Such a high mark can distinguish your application when schools are considering you as a candidate for admission. However, the SAT Subject Test in French is certainly not basic or easy. It's filled with multiple-choice questions that analyze each of your French reading comprehension skills, grammatical knowledge, and breadth of vocabulary.

While you may have encountered many of the concepts on the exam in your high school French classes, it may have been months or years since you last studied them in detail. Working by yourself to review the large amount of content you need to be familiar with in order to succeed on the SAT Subject Test in French can result in a great deal of wasted time and effort as you determine by trial and error which topics require the most attention. Relying on impersonal review materials may not remedy this situation, but private instruction can help you approach your review with the guidance of a fluent tutor and study in an efficient and effective way.

In our session the student and I primarily focused on the English section. Because she was having difficulty with these types of questions, I had her change strategies to where she writes in what she thinks an appropriate response would be before looking at the answer choices. This seemed to work much better for her and is forcing her to actively think about grammatical problems like tense and subject/verb agreement. We also went through some of the science and math sections. She did well in both of these, but had some comprehension issues with science. Those are easily solved by more practice with the material. Overall, her technique is much better and she seems to be answering questions correctly with greater consistency.

The student is in the home stretch. He has raised his score from 1700 to 2100 on the most recent official test. He's now consistently getting scores in the 2200 range, his goal for the October test. We're going to shift into review and practice mode even as we continue to build his vocab.

We practiced English, reading, and science passages to assess his strengths and weaknesses in each section. For science, he does well on data representation questions, needs to improve focus on conflicting viewpoints questions, and struggles a bit with research summary questions. As for English, he has a solid understanding of grammar/mechanics, but can improve on rhetorical skills (organization, style, etc.). Lastly, his difficulties in the reading section stem from limited comprehension, and can be remedied with a different strategy, one that allows him to spend more time on questions and less time re-reading the passage.

We worked on the reading section of the test, going over a few Scrambled Paragraphs, Logical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension problems. The student has gotten much better at the Scrambled Paragraphs and does great on Logical Reasoning. We also went over a few math concepts from last time that the student still wasn't sure of.

We started by talking about the client's previous performance on the test and what she thought was her weakest sections. She worked a couple of science passages and we talked about the types of passages and general strategies in this section. We then went over some questions on various topics covered in the math section to determine what she needed practice on. Lastly, she worked on some English and reading passages and we went over the answers.

I spent this first session trying to see what the student was having trouble with. It seems that her main problem is test anxiety. From what I understand, she does well when she practices, but on the actual test her nerves make it hard for her to concentrate and she often changes her answers. I feel that the best course of action is to work on strategies that will stop her from panicking and address the problems she doesn't understand so that she is confident going into the test.
