I am a graduate of Ramapo College where I received my bachelors degree. I am currently a candidate for my Masters in Elementary Education at William Paterson University. I have worked in Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 5th grade, and I really enjoy working with students who struggle with English and Language Arts. I have very fond memories as a child of visiting the library in the summer and having a general love for reading. I find that students who struggle in these areas continue to struggle in all areas of their education. I take great pride in working with my students and making valuable changes in their education lives. In my spare time I enjoy cooking and hot yoga.

I am a graduate of The University of Florida where I received my Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Since graduation, I have traveled extensively, to Brazil, Argentina, Greece, Turkey, and more. Last year, I served with City Year: a not-for-profit organization aimed at lowering the high school dropout rate through interventions to improve academics, behavior, and attendance. I worked in an English classroom teaching high school freshmen while tutoring Algebra and Geometry everyday after school. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, Literature, Algebra, and History. I am a firm proponent of equal education opportunity for all as it is absolutely necessary for anyone to succeed. I try to encourage my students to have an appreciation for their education as it is a privilege they have and millions of others do not. I want to inspire them to try their best in all of their academics and to help them feel confident about school. In my spare time, I enjoy yoga, singing, playing soccer, and watching live theater.

I'm a Ph.D. candidate in the English Dept. at UC Berkeley back in NYC to finish my dissertation. Over the past few years, I've taught students at a wide range of levels including: College literature and composition classes at UC Berkeley, Middle school writing classes, High School Essay Writing and SAT Test Prep classes, SAT/PSAT tutoring, and High school tutoring (English and History).I'm fluent in French and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris for a year during my previous life as a Historian. When I'm not tutoring or working on my dissertation, I do some freelance writing. It's a cliche to say that my writing informs my teaching while my teaching improves my writing, but it's also true: the constant effort to improve my own work helps me to understand what my students are going through, while my work as a teacher and tutor gives me a fresh perspective on my writing. I always stress that writing is rewriting. One of my happiest moments as a teacher was when one of my students won the UC Berkeley English Department's annual Essay Prize last spring with a paper I helped her to revise. In terms of test prep, I aim for a balance between tricks (outsmarting the test) and skill development (boosting a student's reading comprehension, vocabulary, etc.). I used to be skeptical about test strategies; I got a perfect verbal score on my own SAT and consistently scored in the 99th percentile on the verbal section of every standardized test I ever took without resorting to any kind of special technique. However, as I've worked as a tutor, I've come to realize just how *many* of those tests I took for practice before I took the real thing. By the time I sat down to the real SAT, I'd been steeped in test-prep culture for years. Even if I didn't intentionally set out to attack the test with "tricks," those tricks were embedded in my subconscious. Now, when I work with students to prepare for tests, I try to make sure they have the same level of preparation and comfort that I had as well as the skills to succeed.

I graduated from University of Illinois at Chicago where I received a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and a minor in Chemistry. In terms of teaching experience, I tutored Organic Chemistry at the Math and Science Learning Center at UIC and taught Arabic and STEM courses to young students privately. In the past I've been a helping aid to teachers who taught in the ESL program where I worked with students to strengthen their Reading, Writing, and Mathematics skills. I am most passionate about Organic Chemistry although I enjoy teaching all other sciences as well. In my experience helping college students with Organic Chemistry, expressing complex ideas in a couple sentences or diagrams is the most rewarding part of my work since it yields the most excited responses. I am a firm believer in the 'growth mindset,' where a topic deemed difficult is one that will become easy with practice and understanding. For me, the sentence "I don't understand this," is incomplete without a "yet." Overall, I am passionate about helping students achieve the understanding and grades they are capable of.

I am in my senior year studying to get a bachelor's in Physics Education with a Math Education minor through BYU Idaho. I'm currently student teaching in Physics at a high school in Utah, and will finish with student teaching and with my degree in April! For as long as I can remember, I have loved math and science, especially the problem-solving side of it. If I had to pick a favorite subject to teach, it would probably be algebra, because I have had the most experience tutoring this subject, and because I love the logic of it. Logic puzzles and sudoku puzzles are my favorite things to do on a long car ride when I'm not singing along to the radio! Besides singing, I also enjoy being with friends, whether that be inside playing games, or outside swimming and hiking and being adventurous. I've been tutoring on my own for the last 8 years, in both math and science, and have had lots of different learning experiences with it! Every student and tutoring session has been unique, and has helped me learn and grow as a tutor and future teacher. I've tutored mostly middle and high school students, but have also had small experiences tutoring elementary school and college students.

I am a current student at Columbia College majoring in English Editorial and Minoring in Communications. I have worked with students in grades 5-12 to improve their English, Writing, and Editing skills. I have also taught students grades 5-12 Spanish at varying levels of proficiency . I am extremely passionate in English, Writing, and Editing because it is an essential part of every students life which will help them later on with whatever they choose to do. I am also really invested in teaching student Spanish because it helps broaden their ability to communicate and adds to their skill set. I really believe in helping students grow and improve their work from wherever they currently are to areas they never thought possible. I want my students to take what they learn and apply it in both their school work and their everyday lives.

Frequently Asked Questions
One of the biggest advantages of personalized 1-on-1 instruction is a judgment-free space to practice speaking. In a traditional classroom, many students hesitate to participate out of fear of making mistakes in front of peers. A tutor creates a low-pressure environment where you can ask for clarification, repeat sentences, and practice pronunciation without self-consciousness. Regular conversation practice—even 30 minutes per session—builds confidence and fluency in ways that reading and writing alone cannot. Tutors can also tailor conversations to your interests, making speaking practice feel natural rather than like drilling verb conjugations.
Verb conjugation is one of the trickiest parts of French, especially as you tackle subjunctive mood and complex tenses in 11th grade. Rather than memorizing conjugation tables in isolation, the most effective approach combines pattern recognition with frequent, low-stakes practice. A tutor can help you understand the logic behind conjugations (why certain endings appear, how stem changes work) and then use retrieval practice—testing yourself repeatedly over time—to lock them into memory. Seeing conjugations in context through reading and conversation also helps reinforce them naturally, so you're not just memorizing rules but internalizing how they sound and function in real French.
Vocabulary retention improves dramatically when words are learned in context rather than from isolated lists. Effective strategies include spaced repetition (reviewing words at increasing intervals), using new vocabulary in speaking and writing immediately, and connecting words to themes or stories you care about. A tutor can help you build vocabulary strategically by focusing on high-frequency words first, teaching word families and prefixes that unlock multiple words at once, and incorporating new terms into your regular conversations. This approach is especially valuable for 11th grade, when you're building the academic and specialized vocabulary needed for AP French or college-level courses.
Reading comprehension in French improves when you tackle texts at the right level of challenge and learn to recognize context clues rather than translating every word. In 11th grade, you're likely encountering novels, articles, and poetry—texts that require understanding not just vocabulary but cultural references, literary devices, and implicit meaning. A tutor can guide you through challenging passages, teach you how to identify key information when you encounter unfamiliar words, and help you analyze deeper themes. Active reading strategies—annotating, asking comprehension questions, and discussing what you've read—also strengthen retention and help you move beyond surface-level understanding to the analytical skills needed for AP exams or college coursework.
Language and culture are inseparable. Understanding French culture—history, values, social norms, current events—deepens your comprehension and makes language learning more engaging and meaningful. In 11th grade, you're moving beyond basic communication to exploring authentic French literature, media, and perspectives. A tutor can provide cultural insights that textbooks often miss: why certain phrases are used, how humor works in French, what historical events shaped modern French society. This cultural immersion helps you understand not just what French words mean, but why they matter and how they're actually used by native speakers. It also makes the language feel more alive and connected to real people rather than abstract rules.
Yes. Personalized tutoring is highly effective for exam preparation because a tutor can identify your specific weak areas—whether that's listening comprehension, written expression, or interpersonal speaking—and target them directly. Rather than generic test prep, you get customized practice tailored to your learning style and gaps. A tutor can help you understand what examiners are looking for, teach you time management strategies, provide feedback on your free responses, and help you build confidence in all four skills. Starting exam prep with a tutor several months before the test gives you time to address fundamental gaps and refine your skills, rather than cramming at the last minute.
An excellent French tutor combines fluency (ideally native or near-native proficiency) with strong teaching skills and patience. They should understand the 11th grade curriculum and can explain grammar rules clearly, but more importantly, they know how to shift between explaining and conversing—balancing structured lessons with natural dialogue. Great tutors are culturally knowledgeable and can share insights about French-speaking regions beyond just France. They also adapt to your learning style, celebrate your progress, and challenge you appropriately without overwhelming you. Finally, they're skilled at making you feel comfortable making mistakes, since errors are how language learning happens. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who meet these standards and can personalize their approach to your goals.
