I'm originally from Chile and Spanish was my first language. I moved to the US when I was four years old, but never lost sight of my Spanish. Fortunately, I spoke Spanish every day of my life at home and that continued throughout college when I studied abroad in Salamanca, Spain for a semester. Today, I work as a bilingual writer for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. I enjoy my sharing my native language with others and encouraging a deeper understanding of Latin American culture. I've tutored students in a wide range of subjects including world history, US history, macro/microeconomics, statistics, algebra, Spanish, and geography. Before becoming a tutor, I worked at multiple museums as a tour guide and class instructor. Everyone has subjects that give them more trouble than others, but I'm a firm believer that anything can be learned by anyone, and that learning is more about good habits and creative teaching techniques than it is about natural aptitude for a subject. I was personally able to test this idea when I changed my approach to learning Spanish after struggling for years in formal classes. After re-engineering my study strategy to complement my strengths and weaknesses, I was able to teach myself to be a fluent Spanish speaker in less than a year. With the lessons learned from this experience in mind, I seek to teach my students learning skills that help them get the grade they want in the short-term, but also prepare them to conquer future academic challenges in the long-term.

I started tutoring at Cleveland State University while earning my Bachelor's and Master's in Chemistry. I loved to see when students grasp the material at hand. With my youngest of 4 currently in high school, I started tutoring again, first at Tri-C as a Science and Math Instructional Assistant and now as a Varsity Tutor as well.At Tri-C, I do more than just science and math though. Social Studies, Psychology, basic IT, and English are some of the other subjects I help students conquer.I firmly stand by the statement that every person has the ability to learn, just in different ways. I have experienced this on a day to day basis not only with my own siblings and children, but the students at Tri-C who have learned how to learn. They do not need to visit me as often then for help, but rather they stop in to share with me their successes!

I attended Longwood for my undergrad and earned a Bachelor of Science in Communication Science and Disorders with a minor in Special Education. I continued my education at Radford University where I earned a Master's degree in Special Education with a focus on Deaf Education. I am in my 8th year of teaching and I teach high school (grades 9-12). During my 8 years, I have worked with many students of varying ability levels and backgrounds. I have experience in a a few different science areas: Earth Science, Biology, and Ecology. My passion lies in Biology! I have experience preparing students for our state standardized testing. Something I am passionate about is getting kids involved in science and making it fun! I also have experience working with students on developing the soft skills needed to navigate the academic world such as organization and study skills. I enjoy supporting students with these skills that they can take out into the real world.

I'm a recent graduate of Case Western Reserve University with a B.A. in Biology and Cognitive Science, as well as a minor in French. I'm interested in going back to school for either environmental studies or law, but I still have some deciding to do in that regard! My tutoring experience has been varied, from helping peers with homework, assisting my young nephews and nieces with their reading and writing, to mentoring the younger students at the dance studio I used to attend. These are just some of the ways that I've learned to tutor. My favorite things to tutor are writing and algebra. Both are things that can appear complicated and difficult, but often there is only one stumbling block that a student is having a problem with. Once you isolate the issue, everything becomes simple! My tutoring style is to talk and work through a lot of practice problems together. When the student feels comfortable tackling some practice problems on their own, I know they've mastered the concept. I'm also a great listener; if you tell me that you are having a problem in a certain area of a subject, I can very much tailor the lesson and practice problems to the target area. Outside of school, I spend a lot of my time submerged in water! I love windsurfing, scuba diving, and going to the beach. I'm also a huge, huge fan of snow! I ski every chance I get, and lately I've been getting into snowboarding! When I'm just relaxing, I enjoy a good book, a hot mug of tea, and fuzzy blankets.
