I am a passionate educator currently residing in the DC area. I graduated in 2015 from the University of Georgia with a degree in Science Education. I have much experience working with students of all ages from summer camps, student teaching, City Year, mentoring, and tutoring. I love working with young people of all ages and am excited to get started!

I graduated magna cum laude from Brown University with a 4.0 GPA and a double major in History and Art-Semiotics. After college I worked in the film and television industry and then at a law firm conducting case research and writing legal briefs. Currently, I am a graduate student at Columbia University, earning my MFA in Nonfiction Writing. I write articles and essays, and I’m working on my first book.I love writing and teaching. As a graduate student, I taught a course in personal essay writing to Columbia University undergraduates. I have also taught SAT prep classes and helped students prepare essays for their college applications.I fully believe that writing and test-taking skills can be learned and that one-on-one instruction is the best way to help a student develop them. My knowledge of the subject matter, good communication skills, and ability to encourage my students make me a great tutor. I also think it’s important to be patient and make the material fun while also being firm.I don’t tell my students what to do; I teach them how to do it. The end goal is always to impart my students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed later on their own.Besides tutoring, I am a writer, editor, and filmmaker. I’m a native New Yorker with an interest in urban planning and city history. I directed, wrote, and edited an award-winning documentary film on squatting and gentrification in Manhattan’s East Village. I’m also a dog lover and avid cyclist.

I am a recent graduate of NYU with a major in Teaching Social Studies Education (Grades 7-12) and a minor in Psychology who is passionate about creating equitable learning opportunities and inspiring learners' academic curiosity. I also have a NYS teaching license.

I am a Ph.D. student at the University at Buffalo, studying English literature. My research is in nineteenth and twentieth-century, American literature, and my teaching experience is mostly in English composition and writing, in particular essay writing, making arguments, conducting humanities research, as well as providing solid instruction in writing mechanics and grammar. I have tutored and consulted writers for seven years, and I have taught writing for five.

I have a great passion for learning, and look forward to sharing this passion with my students. I feel as if I succeed when my students do!

One of the greatest accomplishments in life was earning my Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education/Social Sciences and History at Flagler College in 2011. When I walked across the stage of my graduation I came to the realization that I was the first person in my family to earn a college diploma. Within six months I was hired at Hunter's Creek Middle School in Orlando, Florida as a seventh-grade social studies teacher beginning my five-year career working in education. Little did I realize, those five years would take me all over the country, into different opportunities I never thought were possible.Starting at Hunter's Creek Middle School was daunting at first but I settled in quickly. In my first full year teaching, I was assigned to the Literacy Design Collaborative (LDC) team. Working with a non-for-profit called the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), we worked to increase literacy practice within Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) classrooms. I was also Teacher Leadership Team (TLT) during my first year being recognized as a leader in my school. After then being assigned to the county wide leadership team to standardize lesson plans in the district and assist in Professional Development (PD) for teachers to utilize technology in the classroom while maintaining high standards for students and quality instruction, I was recruited to be a literacy coach with SREB.Working with SREB was a job that brought more than changes to my life, it gave me an epiphany to where I stood in my career. The job required me to travel throughout the southeast to assist teachers in struggling schools to utilize the LDC model in their classroom to increase literacy proficiency. Despite my personal enjoyment of traveling and working, I longed to return to the classroom and work with students. So I resigned from the job and applied to schools in Massachusetts and received a call from my current principal, Nathaniel Higgins. When I talked to Higgins on the phone interview from Orlando, it felt like the situation I wanted to be in.Teaching a year in Springfield has given me that drive I hoped that it would to revitalize not just my career but myself on a personal level. I have realized working with the students that I have that I had so much to learn in terms of pedagogy and classroom management. Maura Faulkner, my Director of Instruction and personal academic coordinator, has consistently observed me in the classroom and given me feedback to further myself as a classroom teacher. The meetings and feedback have made it possible for me to push my students to heights I never thought imaginable looking at pre-assessments from the first week. Andrew Marshall, the Dean of Students, has given me strategies to better manage the classroom and to engage with students for them to understand the purpose of discipline being used in a classroom while letting them still have a voice to represent themselves. This has resulted in a class that is structured but gives students the opportunity to engage in content like never before because the flow of my classes is so much smoother. Nathaniel Higgins, my principal, has given me consistent feedback on how to further my career beyond the classroom and to focus my efforts into becoming an administrator to enact greater change in education on a school wide level beyond the microcosm of my classroom. This encouragement and growth has given me the push to further my education into a Master's Degree in education. With all of these strides, I still wanted more out of my career and applied to Varsity Tutors.The main reason I applied is I want more experience working with students that teaching cannot provide in the time frame I have. Also, I want to work with students from different backgrounds and ages that I currently do not interact with. Tutoring allows me to fulfill these passions and to continue to advance my pedagogy as a teacher.

I am a law student at Fordham University studying international business transactions with a focus on the emerging markets in Asia and Africa. I also work part-time as a paralegal at a small Chinese immigration law firm. I graduated in 2010 from Hamilton College with a B.A. in Chinese and Comparative Literature. I spent the last year in Chengdu, China on a Fulbright Grant studying the emergence of legal aid as a resource to female migrant workers.I work with students of all ages and experience levels. I specialize in humanities and Chinese language instruction. Because I am currently a student myself, I can truly empathize with students' concerns and frustrations. My passion for the subjects I tutor enables me to enthusiastically engage with students, help them discover their strengths, and find solutions to their weaknesses. I love helping students achieve their potential and explore their academic interests.I love traveling, yoga, cross country running, eating interesting food (that others prepare, unfortunately, cooking isn't a strength), and spending time with my friends.

I applied to grad schools and was accepted to Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ. I moved to New Jersey where I went to school and taught for them while they paid my tuition for grad school along with a small stipend. I lived in Jersey for a year and a half and then moved to Brooklyn, NY. I lived there for another year and a half. I missed MN and decided to move back in 2005. I have taught students from 12 to 60 years of age, different cultures, skills and backgrounds; in all areas of English, reading and especially writing. I am passionate and get to know my students. That is partially why I am successful in helping them to achieve their goals and go beyond expectations! Tutoring and teaching is a noble profession and I take pride in being an educator. I will not let a student leave feeling confused or frustrated. My students are successful and gain incredible knowledge of the subject and of themselves.I enjoy the outdoors and all MN sports . I am not the best fisher-person but love it, as well as camping (as long as the mosquitoes are friendly).

I pursued this degree because of my passion to help kids, like me, who have ADHD. It took me some time to gain confidence in my academic abilities because of this diagnosis, and so I hope to help other students realize that ADHD has nothing to do with intelligence. If anything, it gives us an edge! I believe any student can master any subject as long as they have the right instructor. My favorite subjects are math, science, psychology, and Spanish. I love good puns, swimming, cooking, and being outdoors. I can't wait to share my love of learning with more students!
