I spoke with both the student and his father and we discussed their approach to securing nomination to the Naval Academy. I also spoke with a co-worker who gave me some further recommendations. I helped the student edit a letter to his government representative requesting his assistance in helping him secure a recommendation. He recently received his application packet and am waiting for him to do the initial drafts for the required essays so I can edit them as well.

The student and I met during his study hall and covered some tactics he can use to approach research essays and papers. We worked on active reading strategies, i.e. summary and analysis of key passages, recording information while reading, and comprehensive building on understanding. Although he had never seen the passages I gave him, and although they dealt with some complex philosophical issues, he was able to suss out their meaning and their significance and to give succinct written accounts of these points by the end of the evening. The next step is to integrate these reading strategies with some pre-writing and research strategies to improve his performance on written work, both in and outside of class.

The student and I spent this session working on her college essays. We brainstormed her response to the common application prompt. After we finished brainstorming for the college app essay, we worked on Essays A&B. She was able to come up with some good ideas to use on her essays. She will likely want to work with a tutor later to edit these essays as well as bring up her SAT score.

The student and I practiced different writing approaches for college essays, writing single paragraphs at a time in various styles. We also reviewed the college application process and talked about preparing for it.

Client had an essay for English class. Proofread essay for grammatical errors. Worked on outlining and organization techniques. Also worked on strengthening persuasive writing and argument structure.

The student and I had a great discussion about applying to colleges during our session today. We pinpointed the schools he would apply to as "safety," "target," and "reaches," and what those schools' application requirements were. After narrowing the list, we looked at potential essay questions. I explained the best ways to approach writing essays, and we made a quick list of some of his best successes, proudest moments, interests, and character traits to incorporate into his essays.
