I am a rising junior at Johns Hopkins University double majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology and the History of Science and Technology. It has always been a passion of mine to explore the details of science. Within these details, my curiosity engages me to pry and ask more questions. One of the ways I am able to do this is at my lab at Hopkins where I do research and design experiments on the neuronal membrane proteasome. Tutoring allows me to spread my passion for biology and chemistry, while also challenging my scientific knowledge. I encourage students to ask questions, will teach them how to apply their knowledge, and emphasize why an answer is correct. Getting the correct answer is not as important as understanding the fundamentals as to how someone arrives at that answer. I have previous experience teaching science through leading study groups at college and teaching high schoolers at my previous lab the fundamentals of biology, experimentation, and laboratory techniques. Outside of classwork, I have played saxophone for 11 years, enjoy running, and am a big New York sports fan.

Through the power of teaching, interpreting, translating and advising I've been able to help individuals make use of every resource available to them and equip them with the tools needed to become a source of instruction and support for others. While I enjoy anything from history to philosophy, my true passion lies in biology, medicine and foreign languages. I find that these subjects compliment each other when coupled together. Through the simplification of language and concepts and the ability to make such content available to more people in their own language it is possible to create a more equitable and welcoming environment in fields that can be intimidating for many people. I aspire to follow a similar philosophy while connecting with students by creating a welcoming atmosphere and attending to their specific needs and goals so that their success and ability to help themselves and be resourceful extends long beyond our tutoring session and in many areas of their life. I find helping others and making their journey a little easier than mine to be very fulfilling and I cannot think of a better way to pave my way to my eventual goal of becoming a cardiologist. There is always something new to learn and finding the right approach is key because we all operate differently but it is possible to overcome obstacles and gain a deeper appreciation for a subject with the right instruction and approach to learning. One of my favorite things to do is to learn from others whether that's a random person at my local coffee shop or a citizen of a different state or country when I have the opportunity to travel. I also like reading (book suggestions are always appreciated), running, lifting, volunteering and I don't mind occasionally losing some sleep to go see my favorite artists play in concerts.

I led the 9th Grade academy where my job was to design tailored math and science curricula for 6-8 high risk academic students in 5 different classes. I provided attendance and behavior sessions for another group of students and I served as the Math Coordinator for my team. Since then, I have been working with Varsity tutors and offering academic assistance to other students in my school. Although medical school and tutoring occupy most of my time, I enjoy watching and playing basketball and soccer (futbol). I am a big fan of hip hop and the arts, as well. I have seen that the biggest challenge that prevents students from succeeding is a lack of self confidence. My mother is a part-time business owner, who couldn't operate a computer on her own until this year. When I was young, she simply decided that she was 'bad at technology' and it stuck. Eventually, my sister and I sat her down and gave her instructions on how to access the internet. The next day, we taught her how to use Microsoft word. We made sure that she focused on each skill alone and ignored everything else that seemed confusing. Two weeks later, she got the hang of it. I tutor by presenting the subject matter in a similar way while frequently setting attainable goals so that students will realize how easy it is for them to master subjects on their own. It is the same method I use to learn all of the challenging material I encounter every day. I look forward to meeting you and helping you build the confidence and skills necessary to succeed.

I've spent most of my education informally tutoring those around me. When I was young, I used to hate swimming at the beach. The idea of sharks moving around under the waves where I could not see them made me scared to go into the water. As I grew up, however, and began to learn about the different sharks that lived off the shores of my home in Massachusetts, USA, I became less and less scared and more and more fascinated with how and why sharks move around in this underwater world. I began to ask questions like, what do sharks do under the water when we cannot see them? and, where do sharks like to go and why? As a marine scientist now I try to answer these questions. Because sharks live and breathe under the water and can swim long distances and go deep into the ocean, further and deeper than I could follow by myself, to study how these animals move and behave underwater I have to use lots of different types of technology. Sometimes I use underwater robots that can follow the sharks down deeper than humans can go, and that can carry things like cameras so I can directly see what the sharks are doing. In my work now, I use special tags that send out signals every few seconds with a unique name that identifies individual sharks. When the shark swims close enough to receivers placed out in the ocean, these receivers are able to hear and record the tag name, telling where and when individual sharks are present in different areas of the ocean. One thing I love about being a shark scientist is that I can follow sharks all over the world. First, I followed the movement of sharks all the way over in the Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of the USA. Then I moved to Tasmania, Australia, and I followed young sharks as they move around off the coast of New South Wales. Now I am back home in Massachusetts and working on publishing my research.
