Toronto AP Japanese Language and Culture Tutoring FAQ
Advanced Placement (AP) Japanese Language and Culture courses demand a significant investment of a student's time and effort. Such an investment can pay off in numerous ways down the road in the form of an impressive achievement on your transcript, potential college credits, or both. The class is rigorous and fast-paced, challenging students to learn to speak, read, and write in Japanese. Not only are students required to write using hiragana and katakana, but they also learn and incorporate a great number of kanji. You may find yourself falling behind in one or more of these areas in your AP Japanese class, especially if the ways in which your instructor teaches does not mesh well with the way in which you best learn or goes against your specific learning style. Do not let yourself approach the AP Japanese exam feeling underprepared and doubtful of your own abilities when help is easily available! Varsity Tutors can help you connect with private AP Japanese Language and Culture tutors nationwide.
The AP Japanese Language and Culture Exam consist of two sections. Together, they will take a student about two hours to complete. Section I is divided into Part A and Part B. Part A is the listening section, which includes interpretive communication, and Part B is the reading portion of the interpretive communication section. Section II also includes two parts. Part A includes personal and presentational writing, and Part B includes interpersonal and presentational speaking. The exam includes multiple-choice as well as free-response questions.
Working one-on-one with a brilliant instructor might be just the thing to help you make the most of your AP Japanese course. Working with an AP Japanese instructor can provide you with a number of benefits that traditional classroom instruction cannot. First is the custom-tailored nature of private AP Japanese tutoring that is customized for you. Every tutor develops a personalized curriculum for each student, allowing sessions to focus on just those concepts and topics that a student has trouble with. This makes tutoring efficient and effective. Whether you struggle with kanji or pronunciation, aspects of Japanese culture, or conversational skills, your tutor can diagnose and identify the areas where extra practice could have the most benefit to you specifically. This allows your tutor to give you the targeted support you need to make sure that your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills all develop concurrently. This is a particular concern given the structure of the AP Japanese exam, which asks students to demonstrate their knowledge of Japanese in all of these forms. If your speaking skills are not up to your professor's expectations, then it is important that you develop them adequately, as the speaking portion of the AP exam forms a significant portion of your overall score. Your tutor can act as a conversation partner who can offer knowledgeable, immediate feedback, and can help you get more comfortable speaking Japanese at various levels of formality.
Your tutor can also help you prepare for the written portions of the AP exam with practice exercises and prompts so that you can feel completely confident when you sit for your actual exam. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with one-on-one professional assistance that can make a huge difference in the way that you approach your AP Japanese class and its exam. AP Japanese tutoring is available throughout the country, and you are free to schedule sessions to meet long-term or short-term needs, at the times and locations that work best with your schedule. You choose what is preferable to you. Some students prefer to meet in person, while other students prefer face-to-face online tutoring sessions using our live learning platform. It is all up to you! Recent Toronto AP Japanese Language and Culture Tutoring Session Notes
Today's session was very productive. The student was able to complete his homework and prepare him for his character quiz. So far he seems to be doing very well in class. His quiz scores are pretty good, and his comprehension and listening skills are still improving, which is a great sign.
Today we reviewed everything that she has learned. During the last few lessons, I taught her numbers and weekdays and all. I'm hoping all this reviewing will help her to improve her memorization and help her to familiarize with all the numbers, weekdays, and months. I'm still trying to teach her how to introduce herself. The student is improving slowly but surely.
We reviewed the content that was introduced in the first 2 lessons. We then worked on more numbers and practiced talking about "age" and "date." Also, new questions were introduced such as "What would you like to do?", and "Where is the cellphone?"
In today's session, we continued to learn about how to ask preference using the word "like/not like". New vocabulary of 4 colors and 2 animals were introduced. The students played a communicative game where they needed to ask preferences of the other team in Chinese. By this week, she can identify the Chinese numbers better now, but will need more reinforcement in pronouncing them. He learns well as he can remember a lot. I left a story book of Chinese zodiac animals for them to read, which includes some content of which we will do in the next few sessions.
We first went over some translations the student did for homework. We then spent the rest of class working on his Chinese homework from school, which involved short answer and true/false questions.
The student and I went over 3 animated children's stories on the site. We practiced pronouncing vocabulary from the stories and constructing sentences from them as well. We also looked at the song "Two Tigers" and practiced vocab from it. The student was great and recognized lots of the words.
