For many students, sixth grade marks the transition from elementary school to middle school. Recent 6th Grade Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I worked on studying for an upcoming science exam (earth science). And we completed her math homework on statistics and graphing. She will begin reading the book "Number the Stars" to catch up on the work she missed while being absent from school.
The student and I worked on math and decided to focus on word problems, since he has some trouble converting language into equations. Second hour with his little sister was also math, since she's working through a math book her teacher recommended.
We reviewed the student's old schoolwork, and answered some questions that he had on his tests and homework. Specifically we covered writing (how to develop a paragraph) and math (multiplications and averages).
The student is finishing up school and had summer math problems to review. She did well on the majority of questions. We will be practicing these more over the summer. We also reviewed her summer science experiment project and social studies/ELA project; I explained some scientific definitions and we organized how she can structure her writing responses.
We did math and reading comprehension problems from the SSAT review book in order to diagnose and teach the student. I gave him a copy of the test we used so he could work some problems during the week before our next session if he so desired. He basically understands factoring, multiplication, division, and basic geometry. His reading comprehension is good.
I worked with the first student on force, motion, and energy. We spent most of the time talking about potential and kinetic energy as well as balanced and unbalanced forces on an object. He has a good understanding of how motion and energy work. During our math review, we worked on arithmetic with decimals. He did very well on addition, subtraction, and multiplication but struggled a little with division as he had not learned it yet.
The second student and I also talked about force, motion, and energy. She was able to list all of the types of energy and to talk about examples of each. We mainly talked about mechanical energy and the details of what happens when an object is in motion. For math, we worked with decimals doing addition, subtraction, and multiplication. She was very good at all of it but needed some guidance with multiplication. She did excellent with estimating.
