Tutoring review by Siddharth in Lafayette, CA
This was our first session and we went over a test that the student had recently gotten back. The test covered absolute value functions as well as piecewise functions. We had to go over a lot of basic graphing skills in order to make sure that the graphing of these more complex functions could be understood. She was very responsive towards the material, and after approaching problems from different standpoints, she seemed to understand the material better! I am meeting with her again tomorrow for some extra practice and so she can get ahead in the class.

The student wanted to complete a French project that was due the next day, a project that was comprised of constructing a French conversation in a cafe. I helped her with the pronunciation of each of the phrases that were in the writing of her conversation, and helped with the punctuation and accent graves and accent aigues (the French orthography) for each French word. She then had to record an audio file of her pronunciation for each page of the project and post each recording on the six pages of French conversation she composed for her document. We went through a practice run of the pronunciation before she pronounced accurately accented French into her recordings. She was very creative with the French words, combining and adding phrases and parts of French speech. This was a very good exercise and project for her because it was interactive and linguistically constructive. She is confident for her first French quiz/test, and we briefly covered the French numbers that she needed to focus on (quatorze, cinquante).

Tutoring review by Angelia in Lafayette, CA
The student and I discussed different ways to begin a paper. For example, free writing, brainstorming, listing, mapping, journals, and outlines. I told him he will have to find out what works for him the best. We read the prompt for his English class and decided to reread Frank O'Connor's story Confession. We came up with a workable thesis and referred back to the book for main supporting points. He will send me a rough draft to look over before the paper is due on Sunday.

Tutoring review by Joy in Lafayette, CA
Today the student and I created flash cards for some common Latin and Greek root words and also for some vocabulary words. We used these flashcards to play a matching game during which she had to match the definition to the correct word. We repeated this exercise multiple times to reinforce the meanings. We also worked on some fraction problems, including converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and finding the lowest common denominator.

Yesterday, we met for the first time and went over a number of concepts, mostly energy, momentum, impulse, work, and power. Things went very well! We've scheduled another session for the other side of the quiz and test, which will happen this week and next. After that, we'll work towards answering more HW problems together.

Today the student and I worked through geometry studying for his exam tomorrow. He seems to do well with rotation, reflection, constructions, slope, and distance formula. However, he was struggling a little with the proofs. Before we finished, I gave him the advice of working through the entire study guide that his teacher gave him and practicing all the problems, especially those on proofs.
