Session Summaries by Biology Tutors

Biology Tutoring review by Sarah in Carson, CA
The student and I reviewed a few topics during our session this week that were problematic for her on her final last week. These included covalent matrix, ionic, and metallic crystals; chemistry lab instruments; and reaction orders. We also spent some time reviewing free response questions, specifically questions involving acid/base equilibrium. She will have an evaluation on the first five chapters of her AP Chemistry review book this week, and this is the topic she feels she struggles with the most. I think she has a good understanding of this topic and just needs some extra practice with the different types of problems she will see on the exam. After going through four different free response questions on acid-base equilibrium, she was doing very well on her own and completed the questions with little to no help from me.

Biology Tutoring review by Nicholas in Carson, CA
Our session was spent covering and teaching circular motion and centripetal forces. The student started off hesitant and unsure, but his mood changed toward the end of the session to being confident in the material, and saying he understood it just fine. I asked him to go over the problems we glanced over together, and to practice some problems before his exam Wednesday.

Biology Tutoring review by Shawn in Carson, CA
We went over the expectations of the lab report. Specifically, we went over what the experiments were doing, how those experiments were performed, and why. The topic was on homogenate analysis of macromolecules from cow's kidney, heart and liver. Together we solidified concepts on how between different tissues, the amount of proteins, glycogen and triglycerides were different, and how those numbers were procured. I helped the student understand difficult to comprehend aspects of the lab manual, and also aid her in writing her report. She had a positive and attentive attitude which made our session both productive and fun.

Biology Tutoring review by Gary in Carson, CA
With Student A (chem) we worked on the general subject of redox reactions. This included the meaning of the concepts, how to detect oxidation and reduction in reactions, oxidation states, and balancing, as well as intro to electrochemistry in the form of galvanic and electrolytic cells. Initially, she had a mostly tentative grasp of the ideas, but through repeated short exercise type problems she gained confidence. She still needs work but is well on the way. Student B's class is studying simple combinatorial (Mendelian) genetics and learning about phenotype, genotype, alleles, and concepts of dominant and recessive genes. We finished with Punnett squares and left off with a method and resources (online) for large Punnett square matrices. The last was partly for a special assignment given to the student.

Biology Tutoring review by Devon in Carson, CA
Last night we studied for the student's exam on body systems, focusing largely on respiration, circulation, and very briefly touching on the skeletal system. Without any prior review, she did very well discussing these systems. She has an exam next week, which I'm sure she will do swimmingly on so long as a few processes are memorized between now and then. The next two lessons we will focus on her lab section (which she says is also going very well, as she is teaching the other students in her lab group while the dissection is going on). We also discussed future scheduling; we will meet the night before her final exam for 3 hours to review.

Animal kingdom. He was fine, and had a good understanding of most material. I will be sending practice questions and referred him to the practice questions on the tutor site.
