I am a 2015 graduate of Drexel University where I obtained a master of science in neuroscience, but I previously obtained a bachelor of arts in biology, minor in chemistry, at Arcadia University in 2011. I am an experienced tutor in the life sciences with 3 years of undergraduate biology and chemistry tutoring and 2 years of graduate biochemistry and neuroscience tutoring. I generally focus my tutoring on biology, particularly biochemistry, but I enjoy tutoring cellular biology as well. When working with students, I prefer to keep an encouraging and upbeat atmosphere, working alongside students to identify issues in learning and developing a plan to address these problems as a team. Having been a biology student, I understand that it is a challenging subject for many, and I love to not only share my passion but also share encouragement based on personal experience. In addition to my interests in biology and neuroscience, I have a wide range of hobbies including writing (both scientific and fiction), art and drawing, piano, video games, and martial arts.

I attended the University of Detroit Mercy where I gained a Bachelor of Science in Biology. I have also recently graduated with a Masters of Basic Medical Sciences from Wayne State University. As you may be able to tell, I have had a passion for science, especially biology, for many years. My academic journey has given me an immense amount of experience with a wide range of subjects and tests. I know very intimately what it is like to be under pressure to perform well in school and on tests and therefore can relate to students under similar circumstances. I have had the opportunity to tutor many people in a wide range of ages and academic abilities in the past.I tutor a wide range of subjects but am most passionate about Math, Science, Reading, Writing, and Test Preparation. I believe the first and most vital step in working with a student is to identify specifically where he or she is struggling. Every student is different and deserves a teaching method that is tailored to them. I believe students learn best when they are guided along through discussion and hands-on methods as opposed to when they are lectured to; I also believe learning can and should be fun! When it comes to preparing for tests, I believe that what you know is only a small part of the puzzle; perfecting test-taking skills is equally important. I have taken many standardized tests throughout my life, and have been able to do well by understanding the tests and utilizing these skills. When I have spare time, I enjoy staying active by playing basketball and exercising. I also enjoy reading, sports, music and traveling. I look forward to helping you find your full potential on the road to success.

Hello! My name is Bernice, and I am very excited to tutor students in Biology (molecular and cellular) at various stages: from middle school to upper-level college courses. I love tutoring because it allows me to stay current on concepts and challenges me to truly understand the material. I also love the feeling of seeing students light up when they understand a concept for the first time.

I am currently a medical student at the Northwestern University Feinberg School ofMedicine. Prior to moving to Chicago, I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh witha BS in Neuroscience and minors in Chemistry and History. During my medical career, Ihope to teach, in addition to practicing in a clinical setting, as I served as a TA and tutorfor 3 years in college and get a lot of satisfaction out of helping students understandcomplex concepts. Although I have been successful in hard science classes throughoutmy education, I have struggled with the complex material and leaned on professors andpeers to help me understand. Thus, I believe that in order to truly understand somethingit's natural to struggle, otherwise you are simply memorizing which isn't helpful in thelong run. Because of this, I like to meet students where they are at and work with themto increase their understanding rather than lecturing at them. I do this by relatingabstract concepts to real life application. Biology lends itself to this type of application, which is why it's my favorite subject to tutor. However, I also enjoy tutoring students inBiochemistry, Chemistry, and all sections of the MCAT as well as the STEP 1 and STEP2 USMLE board exams. Outside of academia, I enjoy running, kayaking, biking, cooking, and spending time with my friends.

I am a rising senior at Washington and Lee University, majoring in Biochemistry on the pre-med track. I have always found my science courses to be the most challenging and rewarding courses that I've taken. The main reason why I have loved these courses has been because of the terrific teachers and professors that I have been fortunate enough to have. In high school, I tutored my peers at the Math and Science Center, and I always tried to personally connect with each student in a different way. In the STEM courses, the concepts can be very challenging and complex. My teaching philosophy is to simplify these concepts by relating them to every-day experiences. I've found that when students can understand these concepts through real life examples and applications, they become much easier to understand. Science can be hard, there are a lot of details that can make students (and myself!) feel overwhelmed. However, there are fundamental principles that are at the core of each field in STEM. My mission is to instill these fundamental principles in my students, so that when they move on in their academic and professional careers, they can use these principles to help them understand any concept.
