As a STEM major on the premed path, I specialize in STEM subjects, but also excelled in high school english and reading courses. I am an FGLI student from a small town in PA and have made it this far through A LOT of studying, and therefore I have found some fun and effective ways to study, especially in difficult subjects. I'm a current PhD student in the history department at Georgetown University who is also an experienced instructor with Varsity Tutors. As a recipient of several degrees, the most recent being a BA in history from Hillsdale College and a MA in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies from Stanford University, I have long sought to make teaching my profession. Meanwhile, as a volunteer grade school teacher and a tutor with this company, I have many years' experience helping students reach their full potential. My favorite subjects to tutor are biology and chemistry as those are the subjects in which I have past teaching experience in the classroom setting. In particular, my teaching style focuses on rephrasing and remodeling initially daunting concepts and information into bite-sized and digestible bits of information that any student can comprehend. I firmly believe that a lot of what slows students down in the learning process is their preconceived notions of course material. My passion for helping students stems from my experiences as an undergraduate where I can remember on countless occasions feeling lost in the material with little direction on how to approach the curriculum. I can think back to the many times I would have benefitted from having someone who could have guided me through stretches of daunting coursework which led me to become a tutor myself. As a teaching assistant, I discovered my passion for helping students manage their way through courses that many considered to be very difficult. Seeing how they reacted to my assistance reminded me why I applied for the position in the first place and motivates me to help students learn more every single day.

I have also served as a Teaching Fellow for a graduate-level cancer biology course running my own recitation sections. I enjoy working with students who are looking to improve their executive function skills as a part of their overall goals for tutoring because I believe in a whole-self approach to time management and skill building. I also thoroughly enjoy tutoring in English literature, high school and college writing, organizational skills, and standardized testing. I've spent 15 years teaching high school English, public speaking, and written expression at elite independent schools, while moonlighting as a public speaking coach. My professional experience includes providing speechwriting and coaching for a now-US Senator during his first congressional campaign. Prior to becoming a teacher, I worked as a director for multiple professional theaters, and my passions for English and Theatre converge in a deep love of Shakespeare. My academic credentials include a Bachelor of Mathematics degree from the University of Texas at Arlington and a Master of Aeronautical Engineering from Stanford University. I am retired from 40+ years of engineering. The last thirty years was working in the flight simulation industry. I had responsibility for doing mathematical modeling of many systems which kept my my math and science skills well exercised. The flight simulation experience also involved frequent use of computer languages such as Ada, C, C++ and less frequent use of other computer languages such as python and java. Tutoring was part of the engineering environment as new engineers were assigned to my group. I earned extra money during my college years tutoring. Though money is not the end objective since retirement, I enjoy tutoring to remain active and challenged. The interaction with students is invigorating. Tutoring gives me a sense of contributing to the well-being of others. It is offering up my skills to help others get a strong start on a career.
