The student and I reviewed the reading test he started and discussed how to find proof for each answer. He did very well and has excellent reading comprehension skills. In the next couple weeks, we will practice working through the test faster so that he can get through all the passages and questions. For next week, he will complete a math test.

The student and I went over the Reading section of the ACT. I explained the types of passages she will see, as well as the types of questions. We went through some sample passages with sample questions, and she did great. She missed zero of these questions. We then took a practice test where I timed her, and she did very well. She missed 5 questions out of 40. I am confident in her ability to navigate the reading section of the ACT, so we will move forward next time.

The student and I discussed his particular challenges with the ACT; Time management on Reading and English, and I introduced him to the preparation process. We then jumped straight into several strategies he can use to make the Reading section easier to manage: focusing on the topic sentences of each paragraph, smart skimming, and breaking down the multiple-choice answers to highlight red flags. He is exceedingly bright; he quickly grasped the strategies I taught him, and I suspect that enough practice will get him to where he needs to be!

I reviewed the student's score report from her February test. She was satisfied with this as her first experience with the test, but we agreed that her potential was higher, and resolved to use our remaining hours to address remaining issues. We spent this session practicing strategy for the reading section, with a focus on getting the most out of pre-reading the questions. We will continue here in our next meeting.

The student and I practice reading passages again today. We did 2 passages where she verbally explained her reasoning for throwing out or considering each answer choice, and she scored 19/20. We then did a speed reading passage, where she was to read and answer with her first impressions in as little time as possible, on which she scored a 4/10. We then did a passage in the middle, going for a proper ACT attitude of deep thought in as little time as possible. She struggles when the time is reintroduced to the equation, but we will keep working on it.
