I am most recently a graduate of New York University having received an MA in Applied Quantitative research. Previous to my graduate studies, I received a BA in Theatre and a BA in Sociology from the University of New Mexico. In the Fall of 2015 I will become a PhD candidate at the CUNY Graduate Center in Sociology. Other than tutoring, I also work as an instructor of English Language Arts as part of a weekend, after-school, and Summer program for 1st generation children in New York City. I tutor in a wide variety of subjects from Writing to Math to Social Studies. I am passionate about education because I believe it is the foundation for building a just society, and I enjoy teaching and learning from people of all ages from elementary to college-age. I especially enjoy preparing students for standardized testing, working to make a mandatory and unpleasant experience into something that can bring them pride and enjoyment. When not teaching and studying, my hobbies include working in Theatre doing everything from acting to set building to grant-writing.

I graduated cum laude from Bowdoin College in the spring of 2021 with an Education and Political Science double major and a Sociology minor. I begin a two-year FAO Schwarz Fellowship placement in September of 2021 at Jumpstart an organization dedicated to providing high quality early education to children between 0-5 with the vision that all children enter kindergarten ready to succeed. Following my fellowship placement, I plan to attend law school.I believe that education is the bedrock of society, therefore, I am passionate about finding opportunities to support students in their educational endeavors. In the fall of 2020 I babysat/tutored twin fourth graders and guided them through their virtual schooling. This included helping them with homework, answering questions, providing further prompts/assignments to understand the material at a conceptual level, and providing support and encouragement when they struggled. My teaching philosophy stems from my strong belief in the importance of social emotional learning. The first step in all of my teaching and tutoring experiences has been to establish trust and comfort with my student. I strive to create a learning environment where students feel very comfortable asking questions, telling me if they need me to try to explain something in a different way, and in general see me as someone who is cheering for them and will do anything to help them succeed. My experiences tutoring primarily are from my pandemic tutoring of 4th graders and mentoring/teaching middle schoolers in college. Additionally, I wrote a thesis surrounding presidential power and legislative influence, therefore, I have spent hours and hours honing the craft of writing. Therefore, essay editing is also my forte. I feel confident tutoring and working with students in any of the subjects I have listed.I look forward to the opportunity to work with your amazing student!

I'm a PhD in the molecular sciences. Although I've done a lot of schoolwork, I appreciate the difficulty some students have with difficult subjects (mine was Calculus), and trying to concentrate when studying is the last thing I want to think about. My goal is to help you plan out your studies so that you can maximize your potential with the minimum amount of work. Sometimes it's hard for some teachers to break down a complex topic for burgeoning learners because they themselves approach it from a higher level and can't think at a low enough level. After a year of science outreach in high-need Nashville public schools, I've found that I have a knack for breaking down complex concepts to an easy-to-digest format that incorporates math and literature comprehension into real scientific problems.Fortunately, the more I learned about a subject matter, the easier it has been to find meaning and see how it fits into a bigger picture.I want to help you understand things in a big-picture way with real-life examples (usually in the hard sciences). This hopefully will help you with comprehension and memorization.

I am currently a senior at the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University training to become a Spanish teacher. I have tutored some of my college classmates in various subjects over the years and have roughly a year and a half of experience working in a high school teaching Spanish to students. My main area of expertise within my content area is Spanish literature of Latin America, but I also have extensive education in Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and culture. In addition to my education in Spanish, I have also had training in English composition and teaching English as a second language.During my year and a half of teaching in high school classes, I have had the opportunity to teach several English language learners. I believe that I am able to help English language learners particularly well because I am open minded and see their native cultures and languages as assets rather than burdens.I use similar practices for both Spanish and English language learners. These practices include using pictures, PowerPoint presentations, music, and videos. I mix these with some more traditional practices (guided notes, advanced organizers, handouts), but I have found using technology to be one of the best ways to learn a language.I love to communicate with people and discover new ways of looking at the world from them. I hope that I can learn just as much from my tutees as they can learn from me.

I am currently a student at the University of Colorado Boulder studying Astrophysics. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I am completing my degree from my home in Minnesota! When I graduate, I am hoping to go on to obtain a master's in education and become a licensed teacher. I want to see a world of educational equity and I think tutoring is a great way to get there. I believe it is important to get to know every student, their learning style, and what they need from a tutor before beginning the actual tutoring so the sessions can be more personalized. I love to help in areas of math and science, specifically physics and calculus are my strong points.

I believe that there are a few key steps that must be taken before being able to successfully facilitating learning: getting to know a student and building trust, discovering strengths and finding ways to utilize them, and building a love of learning and an enthusiasm for the process of learning, while continuing to feed that enthusiasm, especially when challenges are encountered in the learning process. Without these steps, the progress of the student will be much slower, if there is any at all.One on one teaching sessions are uniquely designed to better accomplish these steps. Perhaps your student's teacher has been too busy to really get to know him or her, or perhaps their personalities simply clash, which makes the learning process much more difficult for your child. This could have even led them to build barriers between themselves and learning.I can break down those barriers, discover your child's strengths and use those to help them conquer their difficulties. I'm very good at building trust with children. I worked as a camp counselor for 5 years with ages 9-18, and I've helped a lot of kids find their confidence and achieve things that they thought were impossible. I've also been working one on one helping students improve their writing since I was in high school. I started helping 4th graders with their writing portfolios at my old elementary school when I was fifteen, and in college I did a teaching internship there and at my old high school.I also gained a lot of experience in 6 years of creative writing workshops. I was lucky enough to go to Interlochen Arts Academy to study writing for the last two years of high school, and I spent all of college continuing to rigorously study the art of writing and the creative collaboration/critical experience one gets from writing workshops. I also learned a lot from getting a liberal arts education, where not learning what to learn but how to learn is the goal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ninth grade social studies introduces several new demands that can challenge students. Many struggle with the volume of historical content and memorization, while others find it difficult to move beyond simple fact recall to analyze primary sources, evaluate different perspectives, and make historical connections. Students also often underestimate the writing requirements—essays demanding evidence-based arguments are a significant shift from middle school.

Personalized 1-on-1 instruction helps address these challenges by focusing on your student's specific weak points, whether that's building research skills, strengthening analytical thinking, or improving essay structure. A tutor can break down complex historical concepts into manageable pieces and help students develop the critical thinking skills that social studies increasingly demands.

In a classroom setting, teachers must move at a pace that works for the majority of students, which means some students fall behind while others aren't sufficiently challenged. Personalized tutoring adapts entirely to your student's learning style, pace, and specific gaps. If your student struggles with map reading and geography but excels at document analysis, a tutor focuses instruction where it's needed most.

Additionally, tutors can use varied teaching strategies tailored to your student—whether that's Socratic questioning to develop critical thinking, visual timelines to organize historical events, or scaffolded essay-writing techniques. This individualized approach typically results in deeper understanding and stronger academic performance than classroom instruction alone.

Most 9th grade social studies programs focus on world history, typically spanning from ancient civilizations through the early modern period, though some curricula emphasize modern world history or global cultures. The specific content varies by state and district, but students generally learn about major civilizations, significant historical events, cultural developments, and the geographic and economic factors that shaped societies.

Beyond content knowledge, 9th grade social studies emphasizes critical skills: analyzing primary and secondary sources, understanding cause-and-effect relationships, comparing different historical perspectives, and supporting arguments with evidence. When connecting with a tutor, it's helpful to share your student's curriculum or textbook so instruction aligns directly with classroom expectations and upcoming assignments.

The most effective social studies tutors combine subject expertise with the ability to make history engaging and understandable. Look for someone who can explain complex concepts clearly, help students develop analytical skills rather than just memorize facts, and guide students through essay writing and source analysis. A tutor should also be familiar with common 9th grade curricula and understand the specific standards your student's school emphasizes.

Equally important is a tutor who can diagnose where your student is struggling—whether it's time management with long assignments, critical thinking skills, or basic content knowledge—and adjust instruction accordingly. Varsity Tutors connects you with experienced tutors who specialize in 9th grade social studies and can tailor their approach to your student's learning needs.

Essay writing and source analysis are core skills in 9th grade social studies, and many students struggle with moving beyond summarizing to actually analyzing and arguing. A tutor can teach the framework for constructing evidence-based arguments: developing strong thesis statements, selecting relevant sources, analyzing why sources matter, and organizing ideas logically. They can work through this process step-by-step, often using practice essays or assignments your student is working on in class.

For source analysis, tutors help students ask critical questions: Who created this source? What was their perspective or bias? What does this tell us about the time period? Through guided practice with real historical documents, students develop the analytical thinking that strengthens both essays and test performance.

With personalized instruction, students typically see improvements in multiple areas. Grade improvements are common—students raise test scores by understanding concepts more deeply rather than cramming facts, and essays improve as students learn to construct stronger arguments. Beyond grades, students develop confidence in their ability to tackle complex historical material and analytical tasks.

Many students also report better organization and time management with longer assignments, and a genuine interest in the subject as they understand the relevance of history to current events. The timeline varies depending on your student's starting point and the frequency of tutoring, but most students show measurable progress within 4-6 weeks of regular sessions.

The ideal frequency depends on your student's current performance, learning goals, and the specific challenges they're facing. A student who needs help with an upcoming unit exam or major essay might benefit from intensive weekly sessions for a few weeks, while a student working on broader skill development might thrive with bi-weekly sessions over a longer period. Some students find monthly check-ins helpful for maintaining skills and staying on track.

When you connect with a tutor, they can assess your student's needs and recommend a schedule that balances meaningful progress with your family's schedule. Many students see solid improvement with consistent weekly or bi-weekly sessions, though even one session a week focused on the right skills can make a significant difference.
