I graduated cum laude from Bowdoin College in the spring of 2021 with an Education and Political Science double major and a Sociology minor. I begin a two-year FAO Schwarz Fellowship placement in September of 2021 at Jumpstart an organization dedicated to providing high quality early education to children between 0-5 with the vision that all children enter kindergarten ready to succeed. Following my fellowship placement, I plan to attend law school.I believe that education is the bedrock of society, therefore, I am passionate about finding opportunities to support students in their educational endeavors. In the fall of 2020 I babysat/tutored twin fourth graders and guided them through their virtual schooling. This included helping them with homework, answering questions, providing further prompts/assignments to understand the material at a conceptual level, and providing support and encouragement when they struggled. My teaching philosophy stems from my strong belief in the importance of social emotional learning. The first step in all of my teaching and tutoring experiences has been to establish trust and comfort with my student. I strive to create a learning environment where students feel very comfortable asking questions, telling me if they need me to try to explain something in a different way, and in general see me as someone who is cheering for them and will do anything to help them succeed. My experiences tutoring primarily are from my pandemic tutoring of 4th graders and mentoring/teaching middle schoolers in college. Additionally, I wrote a thesis surrounding presidential power and legislative influence, therefore, I have spent hours and hours honing the craft of writing. Therefore, essay editing is also my forte. I feel confident tutoring and working with students in any of the subjects I have listed.I look forward to the opportunity to work with your amazing student!

Conversational Spanish Tutor • +23 Subjects

I have been a teacher for the past 10 years, teaching all core subjects to students of all ages. I have worked with students as young as kindergarten and as old as high school seniors, through my regular classroom and summer school jobs. I currently teach 6th grade (for the past 5 years), in a typical elementary style self-contained classroom, meaning I teach all subjects, and I absolutely love it! I enjoy working with people and helping them develop their interests and skill sets, as personal growth is one of my most important values. I have both my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and master's degree in Educational Leadership from Cardinal Stritch University. As an undergrad I also minored in Literacy and Spanish, the latter of which allowed for a wonderful summer study abroad experience in Guatemala. I teach all subjects but enjoy tutoring math the most, since when I was a young student I struggled in math. Through consistent effort and practice I began to improve in my math abilities and I want to impart that same feeling of success to my students. I learned many strategies to help math make sense to me and I now introduce a variety of methods to help my students make sense of solving problems. I also enjoy tutoring for the PRAXIS exam and helping to develop test taking skills; my students consistently show meaningful growth on our state standardized testing. My Praxis Core Reading score: 181, Praxis Core Writing: 180, Praxis Core Math: 184. I am very eager to engage in new experiences, especially ones that allow me to tap into my creative side. I feel as though I am the most energized, best version of myself, when I am writing (songs, raps, poems, plays), singing, rapping, acting, directing, dancing, painting, and anything else that allows me to express myself while having a good laugh along the way.

My decision to seek out a four-year institution for its plethora of almost esoteric opportunities has yielded me a greater appreciation for how ambitious and capable people truly are, which is best captioned while a set of challenges are being confronted. This kind of self-determination is an aspect not limited to a college education and his purely individualistic. It's been my experiences tutoring college writers in an array of different subjects that augmented this belief that everyone has something to gain by honing their writing, but sometimes we need someone trustworthy to point out where we have been lapsing. There shouldn't be any question that this skill has to be cultivated to see significant growth, but where does anyone get if they spend more time sufficing than striving?I've been a college writing tutor for over a year and consider every person's writing capability an invaluable trait worth honing. I think tutoring's a practice so largely undervalued that some people have difficulty defining what role a tutor's meant to play. They're not a talking calculator or implanted with your specific answer sheet, but rather put their focus towards seeing you progress. If time and energy aren't ingredients given their needed respect, however, the process undercuts itself rather abruptly.

Hi! I'm Amanda and I'm passionate about education. I have a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and earned my Master's degree in education as well with a speciality in Children's Literature. I have worked with many young students in the past 6 years in various subject areas. However, phonics and literature are my favorite because we read every single day with everything we do! I believe children learn in various ways - not one, uniform way. I teach the way students learn - by using various strategies and approaches to best reach all learners. Every child can and deserves to learn. My goal is to boost the self-confidence in children to make them better learners and love learning to be successful in all that they do!

I'm a graduate of the University of Washington in Seattle where I received my MFA in Acting from the School of Drama. I did myundergraduate work in Theatre and Performance Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.Since relocating to Manhattan from the West Coast, I've had the great fortune to teach in a variety of settings-- from privatetutoring, to lead teaching at ESL Language Schools, to leading literacy-based theater residencies in the public school system. My earliestteaching experiences were in college-level English and ESL-- I'm a CELTA-certified ESL teacher, and have always been passionate aboutlanguage and literacy. In recent years, however, I've also been working more and more on privately tutoring Language Arts, Humanities, and Test Prep (SAT, AP, TOEFL) with students at the middle and high school level. I love the challenge of tailoring my lessons to an individual student's needs, and the rewarding process of helping a student find the specific approach and skill set that works for him or her. I thinkit's vitally important to give my students the skills they need to go on and work independently-- so I look at tutoring as partof the developmental process that will have lasting, tangible results. As a parallel to my teaching work, I'm an actor and playwright. In my spare time I love exploring new neighborhoods, traveling, cooking(and eating!) and watching movies.

I have been tutoring all levels of Spanish for over 10 years. I love working with students on an individual basis to help them succeed in their class. I understand that foreign languages don't come easy for everyone. I actually almost failed my first year of Spanish in high school. However, with hard work and persistence, I ended up excelling in my classes and now, more than 15 years later, I am a Spanish translator and interpreter. I know what worked for me when I was struggling, so I like to incorporate those same strategies with other students. I like to use humor and word associations to help students remember things. I get along with any type of personality and have a passion for working with special needs students as well. I have worked with students from age 8 to 68! It is never too early or too late to start learning Spanish. I hope that my passion for the Spanish language will spill over into the lives of my students.

Frequently Asked Questions

Classroom French instruction often limits speaking time—students might only get a few minutes per class period. Personalized 1-on-1 French tutoring gives your student consistent, focused conversation practice with a tutor who adjusts to their pace and confidence level. Tutors can engage students in real dialogue about topics they care about, from favorite hobbies to current interests, making speaking feel natural rather than intimidating. This regular practice builds fluency and accent awareness in ways group settings simply can't match.

Verb conjugation is one of the most challenging aspects of French at the 6th grade level, especially with irregular verbs and multiple tenses. Expert tutors break down conjugation patterns into manageable pieces, showing students why verbs change and how to recognize patterns rather than memorizing endless charts. Tutors use targeted practice, retrieval strategies, and real conversation to embed conjugation naturally—so students internalize the rules through usage rather than rote memorization. Over time, conjugation becomes intuitive rather than a source of frustration.

Vocabulary sticks when students encounter words in context and use them repeatedly over time. Tutors employ strategies like spaced repetition, where new vocabulary is reviewed at increasing intervals, alongside practice testing and real conversation. Rather than drilling vocabulary lists, tutors weave new words into topics your student actually cares about—whether that's sports, music, or gaming. This contextual, personalized approach helps words stick far better than textbook vocab units alone.

Reading and writing require different skills than speaking and listening. Tutors work on reading comprehension through short stories, articles, and authentic materials at appropriate levels, teaching students to understand context clues and recognize grammar patterns in texts. For writing, tutors provide guided practice with sentence construction, paragraph organization, and editing—offering immediate feedback that students don't get on written assignments turned in to teachers. This balanced approach ensures students develop strength across all four language skills.

Language and culture are inseparable. Understanding French customs, celebrations, and daily life helps 6th graders grasp why language works the way it does—and makes learning more engaging. Expert tutors weave cultural elements into lessons naturally: discussing how French teens greet each other, what foods matter in French culture, or how holidays are celebrated. This immersion-style approach makes French feel like a living language rather than abstract grammar rules, boosting both motivation and retention.

Pronunciation is one area where 1-on-1 instruction shines. Tutors hear your student speak, identify specific sounds they struggle with—like the French 'r' or nasal vowels—and provide targeted practice and feedback. They can model correct pronunciation and explain how to position their mouth for unfamiliar sounds. Regular conversation practice with a tutor also trains your student's ear to recognize authentic French sounds, gradually improving their accent naturally over time.

With consistent tutoring, 6th graders typically see improved test scores, stronger classroom confidence, and measurable growth in speaking and writing skills. Many students move from struggling with basic conjugation to comfortably constructing sentences, asking questions, and understanding classroom instruction better. Beyond grades, students often develop genuine interest in French language and culture. The timeline depends on starting point and frequency, but most students notice meaningful progress within 4-6 weeks of regular tutoring sessions.
