Session Summaries by Writing Tutors

Writing Tutoring review by Susan in Melrose Park, IL
I had given the student an assignment to write a follow up letter for a job he is very interested in being offered. He sent it to me on Monday night and I had reviewed/edited it so that we spent our session going over all the changes I thought needed to be made along with teaching explanations. The bulk of our editing involved changing his sentence structure from passive to active voice. It wasn't very long before he could find the passive examples and continuously improved converting them to active voice. The use of commas proved to be a weakness, as in he uses a lot of commas and not always correctly so his original letter provided lots of practice on proper comma usage. I had started our session by showing a huge selection of resources for learning and practicing grammar. I am going to make copies of tip sheets for all parts of speech and he wrote down titles and ISBN numbers of several other books he thought would be a good resource to always have. We discussed finding them on Amazon or at the many local used bookstores he passes every day going to work and back home. We spent about 15 minutes going over the resources I had brought to narrow down what we wanted to use for practicing grammar mechanics in the future and started rewriting his letter. After 90 minutes I told him I thought we should continue in order to finish the letter. Even though this was a great opportunity for him to practice business writing, this was a real life assignment that needed to be sent and emailed today. It was obvious he had put a lot of thought and time into the draft he presented to me. Working together we tightened up his document and created a finished product that stayed true to his original message but polished it to a point that we both were extremely pleased. If he gets a follow-up response that will be the best indicator of a grade for both of us! Next week we will work on mechanics - grammar and when to use past tense. He told me he chooses his verbs based on how they sound vs. tense. I also recommended he read professional magazines and gave him a website that regularly offers free subscriptions to Forbes, Newsweek, and other magazines of that caliber that will help him increase his awareness of solid business writing.
