Session Summaries by Statistics Tutors

Statistics Tutoring review by Sarah in Boca Raton, FL
The student wanted to focus on reviewing material for his upcoming test on Wednesday. This test covers chapters 9.1 - 9.3, which focus on hypotheses tests for means and proportions. Today, we reviewed chapter 9.1 by going through some practice problems. These focused on how to construct and interpret confidence intervals for proportions. He has a great attitude and is very honest about what he doesn't know. He takes notes during our sessions and wants to try to work through problems on his own once the material has been explained to him.

I helped the student complete a one-way ANOVA test for a homework project. The previous session I went over the notes with her and gave her some notes to work with. This time I helped her implement the steps I went over. I also showed her how to run the test with her Ti-84 calculator in order to verify and expedite the calculations for the test. I also helped her with writing the correct conclusion based on her test results. Lastly, also did some post-test analysis in the form of calculating the effect size and Tukey's HSD. She understood the formulas but was just having trouble extracting the necessary information from the problem. Once we identified the correct parts of the data and how to use it in the formulas she seemed to understand how to do the one-way ANOVA test well. In our next session we will be implementing the two-way ANOVA for the second problem on her homework.

The client is taking introductory statistics. He provided PowerPoint slides from his course and we went over the concepts, including hypothesis testing based on the critical value method and the p-value method. We discussed significance levels, type I error and how to write hypotheses and make decisions. We discussed calculating, by hand, sum of squares, standard deviation, and variance.

Statistics Tutoring review by Tom in Boca Raton, FL
This was a good session! The student had a practice test she had completed ahead of tonight's midterm and we went through just about all of it. It was really good to reinforce the things she had done well on it, but even better to identify some of the mistakes she had made and to be able to talk through them and fix them. We plan on meeting again ahead of her final in early May.

Statistics Tutoring review by Benjamin in Boca Raton, FL
The student seems like a very bright student with a great amount of motivation. He not only listens very well but is also ready to apply the theory to the problems ahead. We covered the theoretical basis for standardized and sampling distributions. We also went through standard deviations and variance issues. In view of his exam on Friday, we will make more headway tomorrow on his statistics material and make sure that he's apt to crush it!

We covered an overview of new subject matter, especially ANOVA. We created an outline for the subject matter through the final midterm. We're planning to meet before the student returns home next week on specific subject matter and practice problems.
