Session Summaries by Pre-Calculus Tutors

Spokane, WA Pre-Calculus tutoring
The student and I worked on polynomial division for this session. It was mostly straight forward, as he was very good at both polynomial division and synthetic division. Some of the numbers were complicated when working together with, but for the most part, the questions were easy to work with. His teacher had given him a review worksheet for a test, with questions from his textbook.

The student had a worksheet on reciprocal trig functions and inverse trig functions that we completed. Overall he did well. He had a little trouble with the inverse functions, particularly remembering the restricted ranges. He said he had a quiz last week that he thought went really well. He also has a test at the end of this week, so we spent the remainder of the time reviewing for that. He struggled some with the graphs of the reciprocal functions, but otherwise he did well. I encouraged him to continue practicing problems from his book and to ask his teacher if he would come across any that puzzled him.

Yesterday's session with the student went really well. We reviewed concepts from her Pre-Calculus class and then moved on to her ACT test prep. We covered an entire science practice test, working on ways to approach science passages and problems. The student's goal is to improve her practice ACT score on the real test, and I am confident that with practice and strategies, she will succeed tremendously. For next session, she is going to complete a diagnostic test for ACT Math, Science, and/or Reading Comp. so we have a base to start prep.

1.To calculate distance or height based on triangle relationship. 2.To address all the steps in graphing the sinusoid. The student had questions about visualizing the calculation based on a description of an application work. I explained to him that all he needs to do is to draw out a sketch so that he will understand the relationships among all the sides and angles so that he can choose which formula in sin, cos, or tan to use. And based on the idea of the unknown variable function, he will be able to calculate the answer. For graphing, I taught him how to transfer the graph from a normal sin and cos graph to the required graph. If he follows the steps, he will be able to finish it.
