I'm a graduate of Arcadia University where I earned my B.A. in Political Science with a concentration in International Politics. I also minored in French and Theatre. I studied abroad at the Universite de Paris - Sorbonne and with Kent University in Geneva, Switzerland. Just recently I became certified in ESL - although I have been teaching English longer than that. My background in tutoring is in French, Spanish, and ESL. I also have experience editing and proofreading major blogs and student papers. I have a strong background in history as well due to my degree. My philosophy is to mold to the student and their style of learning. I try to link the subject to something you're interested in if possible and give you the confidence you need to really excel at that subject. I like tutoring because these are subjects that I enjoy and if I can help you break the wall that hindears you from understanding them then I can help you enjoy them too. Outside of academics, I love reading, traveling, spending time with my animals, and watching British tv shows. My newest hobby is figuring out how to use my sewing machine. I am also severely addicted to Pinterest.

I have recently graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BA in English literature. Ironically, as a child, reading and writing were my most difficult subjects. I required the guidance of several tutors. By high school, I was able to enjoy AP English courses and became a tutor for numerous courses myself. During my senior year of high school I joined the Air Force, where I would be assigned as an instructor in Washington, DC. After the service, I resumed tutoring through volunteer work with ESL, GED and citizenship exam preparation. Although I am experienced in a plethora of subjects, I most enjoy helping others grow in their writing and communication skills with essay and speech assistance. I understand how it can feel to need help and have the patience required for one-on-one instruction. I believe with enough time and guidance we can all unlock the potential within, and that sometimes the hardest lessons are our most valuable; therefore, it is vital that we never abandon education. Thanks to the tutors in my life, I now write and publish lyrics in my spare time. In tutoring, I work to enrich my students’ lives through acquiring once unattainable knowledge.

I am a graduate of The Pennsylvania State University. I graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. During my undergraduate education, I worked in several research labs, studying parent/infant relations and couples' interactions. After graduation, I began working at a child and adolescent psychiatric hospital as a mental health technician. In August 2013, I was admitted to a clinical psychology program and began working towards earning a doctorate degree. In my first year of the program, I interned at a middle school and was able to work with many students, including those in special education classes. I have substantial experience working with children and adolescents of all ages. I also have experience in working with individuals with learning and developmental disabilities. When tutoring, I employ a patient and individuated style so that I can tailor my approach to the unique needs of each student. I enjoy working with students on a variety of subjects, including test preparation, study skills, psychology, and social sciences. In my free time, I enjoy being outside, watching sports, spending time with family, and cooking and baking.

My strengths are ELA/Lit, Comp, Essay and Creative Writing, History (US and World), Biology/Earth Sciences, Social Studies/Civics, basically embracing the Humanities and soft sciences. I also have experience as a member of the LBS Special Education Teams assisting students in need of educational and social emotional support in learning.Earlier in life it was my intention to pursue an MFA in Literature with a concentration in creative writing and follow whatever path it naturally may have taken. Instead I went to law school and matriculated in the legal field, specializing as a trial lawyer commanding a powerful pen, legal pad and ability at a podium. Changes in my personal and professional life over the past decade have lead me back to a love of education, teaching, reading, writing and sharing a passion for the academic enrichment of young persons through knowledge, education and opportunity.Opening the minds of elementary, middle and high school students, "tweenagers" is the reward, instilling in them an appreciation and curiosity for life long learning. Being able to reach students and connect through direct interaction using positive reinforcement by delivering cogent and compelling information and issue recognition, basically teaching students how to learn is a blessing.Knowing what happened in 1066 AD might not save one's life in a late night robbery, but paying attention in school (learning how to find out what happened in 1066 AD (Battle of Hastings and it's historical significance) even if via a Google search) is a good start toward living a disciplined life making good choices which goes a long way to keeping one out of that dark alley at night. It was a lesson I learned in high school courtesy of Mr. Kotter, history teacher on Welcome Back Kotter connecting with Freddy 'Boom Boom' Washington, one of his special education remedial learning "Sweat Hogs" (at the time a term of endearment).Earning the trust of a young scholar, taking the mystery out of learning, engaging and opening young minds, watching students whether cognitively, economically and/or educationally challenged or gifted learn to eagerly embrace what they do know as opposed to what they don't know, there is no greater reward, personally or professionally. Once a student trusts you as a credible source of information it becomes infectious, instilling in a student a confidence, a voice, a tangible empowerment opening up a potential for the tangible opportunities life has to offer, a mystery to many young people.Education opens windows and doors. Education is the foundation of future learning and accomplishment. We all face obstacles and make mistakes in our journey towards adulthood. It's the reason pencils have erasers and keyboards have backspace and delete keys. Young persons all deserve second and third chances in education to learn to embrace available opportunities and overcome obstacles in route to success.Education, diligence and perseverance (at times with the assistance of a caring mentor and tutor) are at times essential foundational building blocks in our childrens' eventual academic success.

Frequently Asked Questions
While essays and speeches both require clear thesis statements and strong arguments, speeches are designed to be heard, not read. This means speech writing prioritizes rhythm, repetition, and simpler sentence structures for oral delivery. Speeches also rely heavily on engaging openings, memorable phrases, and natural pauses to keep audiences interested. A tutor can help you adapt your writing style to create speeches that resonate when spoken aloud, rather than just on the page.
Writer's block for speeches often stems from overthinking the perfect opening line or trying to write in order from start to finish. Try starting with your strongest point or most compelling story instead—you can rearrange later. Breaking your speech into smaller sections (hook, main arguments, conclusion) makes the project feel less overwhelming. Personalized tutoring can help you develop a writing process that works for your brain, whether that's outlining extensively, free-writing first drafts, or using note cards to organize thoughts before writing.
Strong speech introductions grab attention within the first few seconds using a hook—this might be a surprising statistic, a relevant question, a personal story, or a thought-provoking statement. Your introduction should then establish your credibility and preview your main ideas so audiences know what to expect. The best introductions feel conversational and authentic rather than stiff or over-rehearsed. A tutor experienced in speech writing can give you direct feedback on whether your opening lands effectively and help you refine it for maximum impact.
Persuasive speeches typically follow a clear structure: open with a hook and thesis, present 2-3 main arguments supported by evidence (statistics, examples, quotes), address counterarguments, and close with a call to action. Each argument should be distinct and flow logically to the next. Unlike essays, speeches benefit from signposting—phrases like "First," "Next," and "Finally"—to help listeners follow your reasoning. Personalized instruction can help you strengthen your logic, choose the most compelling evidence, and organize arguments in an order that builds persuasive power.
Word choice and tone are critical in speech writing because your audience hears emotion and emphasis that readers might miss on a page. Short, punchy words are often more memorable than complex vocabulary, and varied sentence length keeps pacing interesting. Your tone should match your purpose—formal for academic speeches, conversational for personal narratives, passionate for persuasive addresses. Tutors can provide feedback on whether your word choices and tone align with your message and audience, helping you develop an authentic voice that engages listeners.
Repetition and parallel structure are powerful tools in speech writing that help audiences remember key ideas and create rhythm. Repeating a phrase (like "We can...") or structure ("Not just for X, but for Y, and for Z") makes speeches more memorable and impactful when heard aloud. These techniques feel natural in spoken language but can seem awkward in essays. A tutor familiar with speech rhetoric can teach you how to use these devices intentionally to strengthen your message and create lines that resonate with your audience.
The best way to revise a speech is to read it aloud multiple times, as this reveals awkward phrasing, timing issues, and places where you lose your rhythm. Mark pauses, note which sections need clarity, and time yourself to ensure it fits your time limit. Record yourself and listen back—you'll catch verbal tics and spots that need punch. Then revise based on what you hear, not just what looks good on paper. Tutors can listen to your practice run and give specific feedback on delivery, timing, and clarity, helping you refine both the writing and how you'll present it.
