No toy was safe in my hands. As a child, I always took my toys apart to see their inner components and how they produced sound or light. Most survived the reassembly stage, while others were mourned by my mother's pocketbook. When I was in the fifth grade, my mother gave me my first toolkit. To say ...

I graduated from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences. Additionally, I have an Associate's degree in Pre-Professional Health. Accordingly, I tutor students in lower-division subjects, such as basic biology and chemistry, and also upper-division courses, such as immunology, molecular biology, and quantitative biological methods. My favorite subject is biology, but my in-depth knowledge allows me to appreciate the chemistry and physics involved when analyzing biology materials.I have over a year of tutoring experience, which includes working at Lake-Sumter State College in a certified learning center, as well as independent tutoring in college chemistry. I have tutored many courses and have tutored students with varying learning styles and from diverse backgrounds. As a successful first generation college student who is now applying to medical school---and who has consequently learned firsthand how to successfully study---my tutoring philosophy is that it is critical for a student to understand the "why" of his or her studies. From my experience, once a student can understand why the subject matter is important and see how it relates to other topics, other courses, and, importantly, to real world situations, the material tends to become more concrete and easier to learn. So, my style of tutoring allows me to cater to someone who may be looking to pass their final science or math class as well as to someone who wants to take an in-depth look at the material and connect it to other subjects and to real-life situations, possibly taking the material beyond the scope of the course. When I do not have my nose stuck in a book learning new information, I am most likely at the gym or running around Norfolk, Virginia. As someone who has run many races, including a marathon, I know the importance of stepping away from the books, and I appreciate the mind-body connection.

I am currently a graduate student in Chemical Engineering at the University of Delaware. I am working on using magnetic and flow fields to create advanced materials by directing the self-assembly process of nanoparticles . I have tutored students in Chemistry, Physics and Math all throughout undergraduate and graduate work. I truly enjoy breaking material down into its core components that allows the students to understand complicated information.

I graduated with a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Maryland-College Park, and also earned a M.S. in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I have six semesters of undergraduate level general chemistry teaching experience at UW-Madison. During my time in graduate school I also tutored students in chemistry for a few hours a week. I enjoy tutoring organic and physical chemistry, but I am most passionate about general chemistry because it provides the foundation for thinking about chemical reactions between molecules; the knowledge of which all later chemistry subjects rely upon. In my experience teaching and tutoring, a mixture of conceptual discussions and problem solving has been most effective for helping struggling students. In addition, I have found that relating chemistry concepts and problems to topics that are familiar in our everyday lives is a great way to make sessions fun and interesting. In my free time, I enjoy playing ultimate frisbee and basketball, and watching football, basketball, and baseball. I also enjoy reading, playing video games, and watching movies and television.

Teaching is about passion, not only a passion for the subject but for the desire to impart knowledge on your students that will stick with them for a lifetime and prepare them to be part of a new and evolving future. In those terms, teaching is a process of engaging students and empowering them to pursue their own learning. To accomplish this, a tutor has to wear many hats: that of a mentor, a cheerleader, an expert, and others. Many times in the Physical Science class it can seem like an extension of math, an endless list of numbers of formulas that are just given as absolutes. The truth is that being able to solve problems is much less important than understanding the underlying concepts present. Having an understanding of these concepts will make the mathematical work that is involved much easier. The role of a tutor is to reinforce the instruction of a student's teacher and build up a base of knowledge with the use of real world examples. My teaching style is deeply rooted in the idea that each student is a unique human being who has to be listened to and given adequate attention in order to reach his or her full potential. I believe that every student can learn to appreciate and enjoy even the most difficult subject if their teacher has prepared a lesson in the correct way.

While I have more than six years of experience tutoring in a multitude of subjects, I can offer an eager student more than a jump in grades or test scores. I pride myself in being able to bring about not just these immediate goals, but in bringing the student along in a comprehensive way; in writing, reasoning, and learning ability. What I provide is professional and academic mentoring, the kind that allows a student to be more than a test score. Many students, brilliant and motivated though they are, can make poor decisions about the college admissions process, about resume building, what they do in their extracurricular time, in interviews, etc. These problems cannot be avoided by just being intelligent. Even doing research in these areas can be daunting, as the internet, full of useful information as it is, provides both wise and foolish advice to young students. Navigating this resource requires experience and professional acumen, and it is not an inborn trait.I have worked with the entire spectrum of students; those looking to get into an IVY league school, and those just hoping to make it through high school. I can most easily and effectively tutor in the sciences, test preparation, and the writing process. I am the biggest asset to those students who have aspirations in the medical, scientific, or research fields, or who are hoping to be more competitive in the prep-school or college application process.

I love helping people understand material that they have trouble working through on their own. Everyone learns differently and there is a way to teach everyone once you breakdown the information to its most basic concepts and build up from there. I am sure that together we can set you on the right path to understanding the subject matter at hand.

I consider myself both a microbiologist and a chemist. In 2007, I graduated from Arizona State University cum laude with a major in microbiology and minor in chemistry. Most of my college years were spent working in various laboratories dealing with bacteria, fungi, and viruses and using advanced microscopy techniques to visualize them. As an undergraduate, I was the recipient of a Teaching Excellence award for a Teaching Assistant position I held for a Microbiology Lab, which was an expected but great honor for me to receive. I have held two very different chemistry based jobs (one that I am currently in now) since graduation in which I test drinking water and foods for a vast array of microbial agents and chemical compounds that are dangerous to the public. Using my experience in both academics, research and in my career, I have been able to tie in real world problems and solutions to students I have taught and tutored, and hope I can do the same for you!

I recently graduated from the University of Minnesota with degrees in chemical engineering and chemistry. During my schooling I was routinely asked to break down big problems, identify the key parts, and then solve them. This same thinking has made me a successful teacher in areas much broader then math and science. By breaking down a problem and identifying key points I believe I can lead any student to academic success.I discovered my love of teaching during my senior year of college. Now I hope that I can take what I am good at (math and science) and what I'm passionate about (teaching others) to empower students to achieve their goals.
