I enjoy teaching and tutoring high school students. My teaching experience includes Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics and Probability, and Precalculus. I went back to college at age 45 and earned a bachelors degree in math education in 2009 from Western Governor's University. Since that time I have taught students at all levels from 8th grade to high school seniors. When preparing for an end of course test or some other standardized test, the key is to be able to read and interpret the questions and understand what is being asked. When I am not teaching or tutoring, I enjoy hiking, photography and marksmanship.

I am a graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received a Bachelors of Arts in Biology and Music in the spring of 2015. Since graduation, I have participated in science research internships while also preparing to take the GRE and attend a doctoral program in the biological sciences. In the summer of 2015, I participated in behavioral research on chimpanzees, and am now assisting with the skeletal archives at the American Museum of Natural History. I have had experience teaching as a peer mentor for college students in Introductory Biology, as a camp counselor at the Central Park Zoo, and as a tap dance instructor. My academic strengths are science, social sciences, music, and SAT preparation. I loved my time in primary and secondary school and hope to instill my excitement for learning into my tutees. While sometimes tests (both standardized and otherwise) can be tricky and decrease students' faith in themselves, I am certain that, with a little confidence boost, any student can make great strides with their coursework. As a teacher, I offer patience, humor, and brevity. I have enjoyed the time I've spent getting students to become engaged, excited, and proud of their knowledge. I look forward to giving my tutees this "confidence boost."

There are very few things that can excite me more than to watch the eyes of a student light up as the "I get it" moment happens. It is when the defeat turns to ability in their minds and it is fantastic. I have taught in middle school, high school and college settings. Classes taught have varied through the years, including Physical Science, Algebra I, Algebra II, Physics, Chemistry, and Bible. I believe the key to tutoring is in understanding the student. Each of us learns and communicates differently. For the student to succeed, the tutor must learn how the student thinks, teach to the student's learning style and develop the student's skills on how to learn in other ways as well.

I have a B.S in Biomedical Engineering from IIT and a Master's degree in Bioinformatics. I have been working as a tutor at a community college for a year and a half now, and I'm CLRA certified. I tutor pre-algebra, intermediate algebra, college algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus I, and statistics (Including statistics tests on TI83/84). My tutoring experience has been rewarding, as I have had the opportunity to meet many students with diverse cultural and academic backgrounds. It's my goal as a tutor to help students grasp the concepts and learn how to apply them, rather than simply accumulate information. I believe in students capabilities to learn and excel in math. During tutoring sessions, I do my best to break down the math problems into simpler ones, allowing the student to figure out the solution for the problem by him/herself. That way, I ensure that the student will be able to retrieve their math skills during the exams and score well.

I am a graduate of Princeton University, class of 2014. I received my Bachelor of Arts in History with a focus on recent American economic history. I was a pre-med, molecular biology major for my first two years at Princeton, and while I ended up deciding not to pursue a career in the sciences, I took many science classes in high school (AP) and in college, and still enjoy these subjects. Since graduating from Princeton, I have moved to Manhattan where I have started a job as an analyst at a private equity firm. I tutored professionally in Princeton for three years, and am excited to continue working with students as a Varsity Tutors tutor. I have experience tutoring elementary school math, Algebra, Algebra II/Pre-calc, English literature, writing (esp. essay editing), Biology (including AP), Chemistry (including accelerated and AP), SAT, and French (through French III). My own educational experience has had a formative impact on my style as a tutor. I attended a Montessori school from pre-school through 8th grade, and was heavily influenced by the focus on independent learning, discovery, and exploration as a way to develop a more thorough and better understanding of academic subjects. I am passionate about making sure that students enjoy what they are learning, and I try to individualize tutor sessions to match the specific needs of each student. Both my parents are teachers (one a violin teacher and another a professor), which has also influenced my ability and desire to help students learn.Beyond school, I studied the violin for 16 years, the piano five years, and sang in choir for six years. I also spent many years in elementary and middle school as a figure skater. In high school, I played tennis and lacrosse. I grew up in Minneapolis, MN, where I lived up until attending Princeton. In my free time now, I love running, vinyasa yoga, cooking, and finding great new food in Manhattan.

I am a graduate of Boston University (BU) as of 2012, and I recently graduated from Tufts University in 2014. I have received my Bachelors of Science in Biomedical Engineering from BU, and I have earned my Masters of Science degree in the same field at Tufts. I currently work as a research scientist in Cambridge studying therapies for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease. My tutoring experience stems from my involvement in the National Honor Society at Xaverian Brothers High School where I tutored Freshman and Sophomore classes in our mathematics and science, specifically Algebra, Calculus and Biology. Furthermore, after being inducted in the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society at BU, I led tutoring sessions specifically geared to Engineering principles such as mechanics, physics, and mathematics. As an engineer, my favorite subjects to study are High School to College Mathematics as well as the Sciences (Physics, Chemisty, Biology) because it gives the mind a great workout! I am a generally upbeat and motivated individual which is essentially translated to my tutoring strategies; if you can somehow make the subject engaging, the more chances the student will want to learn the material! I enjoy that "A-ha!" moment when the student fully and finally understands a concept! In my spare time, I am a competitive ballroom dancer, theater aficionado and a scientific researcher in biomedical engineering!
